No. 18 Bulldog Softball Settles for Split vs. Pomona-Pitzer, Casillas Breaks Career Putout Record

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

The No. 19 University of Redlands softball team endured a tale of two completely different outcomes during Saturday's doubleheader against Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) foe Pomona-Pitzer Colleges. After cruising to an 8-0 win in six innings, the Bulldogs gave up a 7-10 defeat in the nightcap.

During the first game, sophomore pitcher Kayla Uphold (Fontana, CA) went the distance for the Bulldogs, posting a complete-game performance in which she scattered three hits and allowed no runs. She also contributed one of the team's eight RBI at the plate.

Redlands scored in all but one inning with its biggest output coming in the fifth with a three-spot. Senior first baseman Lizett Casillas (Pomona, CA) crushed a home run to lead off the inning for her third long ball of the season. With runners on second and third and one out, senior third baseman/designated player Aleisha Martinez (Escondido, CA) connected on a two-RBI single up the middle.

Beyond her homer, Casillas uncorked a triple en route to her 3-for-3 performance for three RBI. In addition, her stellar defense allowed her to reset the school's record for career putouts, surpassing All-American-turned-assistant-coach Nicky Neumann's previous standard of 885. After game two, Casillas now owns the record with 896 putouts with six regular-season games remaining.

Although the Bulldogs coughed up two errors in the first game, neither produced any runs for the Sagehens.

Unfortunately, the momentum shifted in game two as Pomona-Pitzer came out firing on all cylinders with a total of three dingers for six of its 10 runs. In addition, Redlands gave up a costly double in the fourth that scored three runs.

However, the Bulldogs refused to just walk away in defeat. Trailing 2-8 after four innings, the Maroon and Gray gained a two-run shot from junior second baseman Molly Duran (Corona, CA) to initiate a small comeback.

Unfortunately, Pomona-Pitzer quickly answered with two equalizing runs in the top of the subsequent frame.

Down 4-10, the Bulldogs responded with a three-run outburst in the bottom of the final stanza with junior catcher Kai Masutani (Honolulu, HI) stepping up with her second double of the game to push across two runs. Freshman shortstop Amanda Clark (Riverside, CA) kept the rally going with a scoring single through the right side. Unfortunately, Redlands' efforts ended there, resulting in the disappointing loss.

Freshman right fielder Amanda Lievanos (Anaheim, CA) enjoyed one of her best hitting performances of late, notching a 3-for-4 game with one RBI and two runs, which included a solo homer in the third inning.

Freshman hurler Gabrielle Sciuto (Poway, CA) took the loss after giving up four hits and four runs while striking out three in 2.2 innings of work.

With the split, Redlands slips into third place of a very tight conference race after Claremont-Mudd-Scripps nabbed four wins in five games this week.

The Bulldogs (25-9, 13-5 SCIAC) strive to rebound during Sunday's Senior Day Celebration against Cal Lutheran University at the "Field of Dreams," beginning at 12 noon.
