Box Score In the second Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) Postseason Tournament semifinal of the day, the University of Redlands men's soccer team fell to Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges in double overtime, 0-1. The loss means that Redlands will not play in the SCIAC Postseason Tournament Final for the first time in the event's six-year history.
Stag senior forward Harrison Doyle (Hidden Hills, CA) scored the game-winner just 20 seconds after the start of the second overtime when he volleyed a shot into the top-right corner of the goal.
In an exciting match that saw both sides trade good chances throughout the night at Farquhar Field, neither team found the breakthrough during the first 45 minutes. CMS had a great opportunity when a shot looked to be headed for the bottom-right corner of the Bulldog goal, but Redlands junior goalkeeper Andreas Silva (San Jose, CA) sprawled to his left to make the diving save. Not long after, the Maroon and Gray had a golden chance of its own when senior midfielder Gabe Ramirez (Pasadena, CA) had his shot saved off of the line by a Stag defender.
By the halftime break, CMS had outshot Redlands, 13-7.
The second stanza was just as electrifying as the first. Silva came up huge for Redlands when called upon, making a couple of spectacular saves late in regulation to keep the score level at 0-0. For the match, Silva tallied seven saves in all.
With neither side able to find the finishing touch, the match headed to overtime.
In the first extra period, Redlands pushed up the tempo and looked to be the aggressor, out-shooting CMS, 5-2. Bulldog freshman forward AJ VanderStaay (Bellingham, WA) almost won it for the home side when a ball was crossed on the ground and went straight into his path, 15 yards from goal. He one-timed his shot, but Stag sophomore goalkeeper Daniel Roberts (Winthrop, MA) dove at full reach to make the crucial save. For the game, Roberts recorded five total stops.
At the start of the decisive overtime period, CMS played a long ball into Redlands' 18-yard box. After a diving-header clearance from a Bulldog defender, Doyle took the ball off of his thigh and then volleyed the game-winner into the upper-right corner of the net, ending the match.
On the night, CMS outshot Redlands, 24-18.
CMS sophomore midfielder Jake Bishop (Vancouver, WA) and Doyle led the Stags' attack, tallying 11 shots combined.
Redlands sophomore midfielder Matej Kustura (Las Vegas, NV) and sophomore forward Charles Izydorek (Redlands, CA) paced the Bulldogs' offense, recording nine shots between them.
With the win, CMS advances to the SCIAC Postseason Tournament final to take on fourth-seeded Whittier College, which upset the top-seeded Pomona-Pitzer Sagehens, 4-1, earlier in the day. Kickoff in Claremont is scheduled for 12 p.m. on Saturday.
Redlands (12-6-3) now must wait until Monday, November 5, at 10 a.m. for the NCAA Division III Men's Soccer selection show to see whether or not it will receive an at-large bid to the NCAA tournament.
