The No. 15 University of Redlands men's tennis team completed a tough weekend of competition with two solid victories on Saturday, downing Vassar College (NY) by a score of 8-1 before recording a 7-2 decision over the 19th-ranked University of Mary Washington (VA).
The Maroon and Gray notched two of three doubles triumphs against the Brewers, with the No. 2 duo highlighting the performance with its 8-0 effort. Freshman Teddy Jones (St. Louis, MO) made his doubles debut a memorable one as he teamed up with freshman Nick Cummins (Rancho Mirage, CA) in the shutout showing.
Junior Anish Nanda (Cerritos, CA) and freshman Gram Leahy (Portland, OR) kept it rolling for the Bulldogs with their 8-4 victory at the No. 3 slot.
In singles, Redlands won at every position in straight sets. Jones ousted his No. 6 opponent by scores of 6-3, 6-2 to notch the Bulldogs' third point. Cummins made quick work of his No. 2 counterpart (6-0, 6-4) before junior Darren Dahl (Westlake Village, CA) sealed the match victory with a 6-3, 6-4 win at No. 4.
Against Mary Washington, the Bulldogs swept the doubles to take an early 3-0 lead. Nanda and Leahy as well as the top team of senior Mark Bloom (San Juan Capistrano, CA) and freshman Patrick Lipscomb (Irvine, CA) put together 8-3 wins for the Maroon and Gray.
In singles, Lipscomb cruised to an efficient 6-4, 6-1 showing for Redlands' fourth point of the match. After a minor setback at the No. 3 position, the Bulldogs secured the match victory with Nanda's solid 6-1, 6-3 triumph at No. 5.
Redlands (9-2) faces No. 30 University of Texas-Tyler on Tuesday in another critical bout between regional foes. The first serve is scheduled for 3 p.m. on Verdieck Courts.
