Taking to the road for the first time since February 4, the 15th-ranked University of Redlands men's tennis team opened Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) action on Friday by battling it out with No. 9 Cal Lutheran University in Thousand Oaks. Despite winning two of the three doubles points, the Maroon and Gray came up short in the singles matches, resulting in a tough 3-6 loss to the Kingsmen.
After faltering at the top spot, the Bulldogs gained two impressive wins in the remaining doubles matches. The rookie tandem of Nick Cummins (Rancho Mirage, CA) and Teddy Jones (St. Louis, MO) uncorked an 8-3 triumph at No. 2, while junior Anish Nanda (Cerritos, CA) and freshman Gram Leahy (Portland, OR) downed their No. 3 opponents by a score of 8-4.
Freshman Jack Reynolds (Denver, CO) provided the only singles triumph for the Maroon and Gray with a 6-2, 6-0 showing at the No. 6 slot.
Redlands (10-3, 0-1 SCIAC) returns home on Saturday, March 24, to take on the University of Puget Sound (WA) and Williams College (MA) in a grueling doubleheader. The Bulldogs face the Loggers at 9:30 a.m. and then hit the courts again at 2 p.m. for a cross-country bout against the Ephs.
