The No. 15 University of Redlands men's tennis team posted split results in a busy Saturday of non-conference action at Verdieck Courts. The Bulldogs routed the visiting Loggers of the University of Puget Sound (WA) by a score of 9-0 before falling to the third-ranked Ephs of Williams College (MA) in a 2-7 decision during USTA Campus Kids' Day at Verdieck Courts.
Against the Loggers, Redlands swept the doubles in fine fashion while giving up a total of three games in the trio of matches. After the No. 3 tandem of junior Anish Nanda (Cerritos, CA) and freshman Gram Leahy (Portland, OR) silenced their counterparts, the freshman duo of Nick Cummins (Rancho Mirage, CA) and Teddy Jones (St. Louis, MO) repeated the effort with another 8-0 showing at No. 2. The top team of freshman Patrick Lipscomb (Irvine, CA) and senior Mark Bloom (San Juan Capistrano, CA) registered an 8-3 victory to preserve the sweep.
In singles, the Maroon and Gray cruised to two-set triumphs at every slot, with sophomore Ted Burchett (Gold River, CA) and freshman Hal Gordon (Salem, OR) giving up a combined two games at No. 5 and No. 6, respectively, en route to clinching the Bulldogs' 11th win of the season.
Junior Darren Dahl (Westlake Village, CA) kept the shutout in tact with a 6-2, 6-1 performance at the No. 1 spot, while freshmen Jack Reynolds (Denver, CO) and Parker Glore (Huntington Beach, CA), along with junior John Brewer (Portland, OR), posted solid victories for Redlands.
During the afternoon match, the Bulldogs battled it out with a totally different opponent in the Ephs of Williams. After facing an early three-point deficit, Redlands never recovered en route to the 2-7 loss.
The Maroon and Gray's only points came in an impressive two-set performance by Nanda, who recorded a 6-4, 6-3 win at No. 4, as well as a come-from-behind effort by Reynolds at the No. 6 position with scores of 4-6, 6-2, 10-7.
Redlands (11-4) continues its demanding non-conference slate when it welcomes the 10th-ranked Banana Slugs of UC Santa Cruz to Verdieck Courts on Wed. for a 3 p.m. tilt.
