No. 14 Bulldog Men's Tennis Stumbles to the No. 6 Stags of CMS

The No. 14 University of Redlands men's tennis team faced off against Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) foe and sixth-ranked Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges on Saturday, competing in a make-up match from April 13.  After giving up an uncharacteristic sweep in the doubles matches, the Bulldogs forced three singles matches to three sets but only came out on top in one of them, leading to the 1-8 decision.

The Stags charged out to a 2-0 lead after winning at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles.

The Bulldogs battled it out at the top slot, seeming poised for the upset with a solid lead.  However, CMS came storming back to secure the win in a tiebreaker, 9-8(3).

Needing to win five of the six singles matches to stay alive, Redlands faced an uphill battle from the first serve.  Unfortunately, the Maroon and Gray came up short in the first two matches, leading to the overall defeat.

Redlands won the first sets in three singles matches, with freshman Nick Cummins (Rancho Mirage, CA) prevailing at No. 2, senior Mark Bloom (San Juan Capistrano, CA) repeating the effort at No. 3, and freshman Taylor Hunt (Seattle, WA) winning at No. 6.  However, the momentum shifted in favor of the Stags, with Hunt recording the only point for the Bulldogs.  He took down his counterpart, 7-6(2), 5-7, 10-7.

The Bulldogs (15-6, 3-2 SCIAC) look to bounce back on Sunday when they host the Sagehens of No. 11 Pomona-Pitzer Colleges at 2 p.m. for Senior Day.
