The No. 13 University of Redlands men's tennis team finished the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) Tournament with a tough 4-5 loss to Pomona-Pitzer Colleges on Saturday. However, by combining the dual-match results with the tournament outcome, the Bulldogs hold onto their third-place position in the final conference standings.
During the third-place showdown, the Sagehens came out firing and nabbed the first two doubles points before Redlands' No. 3 duo of sophomores Max Licona (Culver City, CA) and Teddy Jones (St. Louis, MO) put the Bulldogs on the board with their hard-fought 9-8(2) triumph.
In singles, the momentum stayed with Pomona-Pitzer, as the Sagehens rattled off straight-set victories at Nos. 2 and 5, before sophomore Taylor Hunt (Seattle, WA) pulled one back for the Maroon and Gray with his 6-2, 6-3 performance at No. 4.
However, another straight-set showing by the Sagehens at No. 6 clinched the upset decision for Pomona-Pitzer, which also upended fourth-seeded Whittier College in yesterday's first round.
With the match already decided, sophomores Nick Cummins (Rancho Mirage, CA) and Patrick Lipscomb (Irvine, CA) came up with late wins for Redlands. Cummins prevailed at No. 3 by a score of 6-2, 7-6(5), while Lipscomb posted a 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 triumph at the top slot.
Given its national ranking and strength of schedule, Redlands (14-10, 6-4 SCIAC) remains hopeful for a possible at-large berth to the NCAA Division III Championships. The bracket will be released on Monday night at www.ncaa.com.
