Box Score The University of Redlands women's soccer team welcomed in-region foe UC Santa Cruz to Farquhar Field on Monday afternoon for a rare doubleheader with the men's squad. Amidst a solid performance, the Bulldog women collected an important 2-0 win over the Banana Slugs.
While dominating the offensive third of the field, the Maroon and Gray notched nine shots in the first frame en route to racking up 24 on the day. Junior midfielder Savannah Laursen (Boise, ID) continued to head up the Bulldog attack with her eight shots, while junior midfielder Summer Norquist (Boise, ID) added four of her own, including three on-frame.
Redlands got on the board in the 28th minute on a Santa Cruz own goal, which came off a perfectly placed corner kick by Laursen that was knocked in by the Banana Slug defender.
Later in the contest, Laursen corralled the ball in front of the goal and uncorked a solid shot, forcing the Banana Slug goalkeeper to make an impressive save.
However, moments later, the Bulldogs found the back of the net, when sophomore midfielder Abby Palkowitz (San Diego, CA) fired off a blast into the far corner of the net after receiving the ball from junior midfielder Isabella Baez (Zionsville, IN) and senior forward Lihini Weerasinghe (Redlands, CA).
The defensive unit of junior Sam Keary (Mission Viejo, CA), freshman Erin Schlosser (Sammamish, WA), and sophomore Faith Campbell (Bainbridge Island, WA) continued to shine for the Bulldogs, halting any last-minute chances by the Slugs.
In addition, freshman Hannah Menk (Pleasanton, CA) and junior Lexi Felix (Kailua, HI) shared in the Bulldog goalkeeping responsibilities, accruing two and three saves, respectively.
Redlands (7-5-2) takes on the Whittier College Poets on Wednesday at 7 p.m. in a Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) match under the lights at Farquhar Field.
