The 14th-ranked University of Redlands men's tennis team opened the 2014 campaign with a solid 7-2 win over Brandeis University (MA) on Tuesday. After nabbing a 2-1 advantage in doubles, the Bulldogs cruised to two-set victories in the first five matches off the court for the non-conference triumph.
In doubles, juniors Nick Cummins (Rancho Mirage, CA) and Teddy Jones (St. Louis, MO) joined forces to blow by the competition at the No. 2 slot with an 8-1 showing.
Although Brandeis answered with a win by its top duo, Redlands responded when freshman Tom Suchodolski (Amherst, MA) and junior Ted Burchett (Gold River, CA) registered an 8-3 decision at No. 3.
Suchodolski continued the team's momentum in singles, nearly blanking his No. 4 counterpart with scores of 6-1, 6-0.
Junior Patrick Lipscomb (Irvine, CA) also cruised to victory with a 6-4, 6-2 effort at the top slot, before freshman Parker Wilson (Carlsbad, CA) defeated his No. 3 opponent by scores of 6-2, 6-4 to clinch the Bulldogs' first win of the season.
In addition, Cummins and Jones collected straight-set victories at Nos. 2 and 6, respectively.
Redlands (1-0) heads to Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, OH, for the 2014 Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) National Indoor Championships on Feb. 21-23. The Bulldogs face No. 4 Washington University (MO) in the opening round on Friday at 11:30 a.m. PT. For more information on the event, please visit the tournament home page.
