Box Score The University of Redlands men's soccer team took to the field for its second Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) match-up of the season by battling it out with rival Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges under the lights at Farquhar Field on Monday evening. In a combative contest that displayed 43 fouls and seven yellow cards, the Bulldogs collected the hard-fought victory with a 1-0 decision over the Stags.
Multiple opportunities sprouted for the Bulldogs early, as sophomore midfielder Casey ChubbFertal (Eugene, OR) blasted off two shots in the first 10 minutes of action. Sophomore forward Chase Boone (Portland, OR) returned to action tonight, as he came off the bench to produce a swift, sliding shot in front of the goalkeeper's box just a few minutes later.
The Bulldogs continued to press on and succeeded with a score in the 41st minute, compliments of a two-touch blast from ChubbFertal that knuckled past the Stags' goalie for 1-0 advantage.
CMS attempted to counter just seconds later, but sophomore goalkeeper Dylan Ochoa (Santa Monica, CA) had other plans, as he notched two saves to preserve the one-score lead and the shutout.
During the second half, Redlands used an arsenal of savvy tackles and physical play to hold the Stags' offense to only a pair of shots. The Bulldogs' defensive unit of junior Tom Elsea (Mission Viejo, CA), sophomore Keoni Yates (Kailua-Kona, HI), senior Peter Marsden (Woodside, CA), and sophomore Ben Thompson (Spokane, WA) acted as a brick wall for the Maroon and Gray.
In addition, sophomore midfielder Sergio Valencia (San Jose, CA), freshman midfielder Jesus Avalos (La Quinta, CA), and junior midfielder Austin Moore (Las Vegas, NV) joined an aggressive charge up and down the field. Freshman midfielder Arman Mogharei (Danville, CA) contributed quality minutes off the bench as well.
The Bulldogs fired off a total of five shots in the second half, but no scores were needed as they reeled in a 1-0 victory for the squad's first SCIAC win of the season.
ChubbFertal banged out four shots on the night, while sophomore Isaac Bogart (Lynden, WA), Boone, and Valencia each tried their foot twice.
Ochoa (3-1-0) recorded his second-consecutive shutout victory and tallied three saves.
Both teams produced a fiery contest, as seven yellow cards were issued – four on CMS and three on Redlands.
Head Coach Ralph Perez shared some insight on his team's play following the victory.
"The first half I thought we played well," said Perez. "We are happy about a shutout against a good team and we're happy about getting our first SCIAC win. We have to get ready, regenerate tomorrow, and go to Chapman."
Redlands (3-1-0, 1-1-0 SCIAC) faces off against the Chapman University Panthers (2-2-2, 1-1-0 SCIAC) on Wednesday, September 16, in Orange at 4 p.m.
