No. 16 Redlands Men's Soccer Triumphs over CMS in Physical Battle

Box Score

The No. 16 University of Redlands men's soccer team faced Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) foe, Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges, in a Saturday night contest on Farquhar Field. The Bulldogs jumped on the board in the eighth minute and never looked back, as they went on to score two more in the 3-0 victory over CMS.

The Maroon and Gray came out firing on all cylinders, as sophomore midfielder Matias Lazo-Fanning (Seattle, WA) worked the ball up into the near corner in the eighth minute. He launched a nice, high pass towards goal that found the head of senior midfielder Casey ChubbFertal (Eugene, OR), who knocked it off the near post and into the back of the net for the 1-0 Bulldog advantage and eventual game-winner.

Redlands kept the barrage of shots coming, but the Stag goalkeeper made the necessary saves. In the 32nd minute, senior forward Cameron Doody (Arvada, CO) fired a cannon of a shot that forced the CMS keeper to leap and punch the ball over the crossbar. Sophomore defender Dylan Carlyle (San Jose, CA) and sophomore forward Antony Chonga (San Diego, CA) also had two good looks towards goal in the first stanza.

The Stags stepped up their pressure at the beginning of the second half, forcing senior goalkeeper Josh Haskill (Lakewood, CA) to make a save just two minutes into the action.

At the 51:18-mark, sophomore forward Kayvon Parsa (West Hills, CA) and senior forward Chase Boone (Beaverton, OR) put together a nice, three-touch combo that allowed Boone to bang one past the Stag goalkeeper.

Just a minute and a half later, Boone found senior midfielder Sergio Valencia (San Jose, CA) on a short pass in front of the box, where Valencia knocked the ball past the sliding goalkeeper for the 3-0 insurance goal.

However, CMS refused to go away and continued to press offensively. But thanks to the defensive efforts of Carlyle, Lazo-Fanning, ChubbFertal, and senior Ben Thompson (Spokane, WA), Haskill successfully upheld the clean-sheet victory.

The Bulldogs (10-3-1, 9-0-1 SCIAC) take on the Whittier College Poets on Wednesday, October 18, in a 7 p.m. kickoff on Farquhar Field.
