Redlands Women's Soccer Electrifies with Second-Half Surge in 3-1 Win over Caltech

Box Score

The University of Redlands women's soccer team used an electric second half to secure a 3-1 win over the visiting Caltech Beavers on Saturday night under the lights on Farquhar Field. Junior forward Bryn Anderson (Tahoe City, CA) scored twice in the second stanza to help build a solid lead in the first-ever Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) meeting of these two women's teams.

Flashing back to the first half, the Maroon and Gray had no problem working the ball into the opponent's offensive third with three early shot attempts in the first five minutes of the contest. Redlands' accuracy on the interior paid dividends in the 24th minute when first-year midfielder Logan Swim (Issaquah, WA) played a perfect pass to senior forward Adi Fellows (Albuquerque, NM), who was rushing into the box. The defense had no time to recover, as she Fellows connected with the pass and sent the ball into the upper-left corner of the net for the inaugural goal of the match.

For the duration of the half, the stingy Bulldog defense continued to foil each of the Beavers' attacks. As time expired, Caltech finally broke through with a desperation shot from deep that snuck its way into the back of the net to knot the match at 1-1.

Following the halftime break, Redlands entered the final 45 minutes with a renewed sense of urgency and energy. After persistently attacking, the Bulldogs took the simple approach for their second goal. Redlands worked the ball down the right wing to Anderson, who controlled it and turned around to be unchecked by the defender. With open space in front of her, she launched a blast from near the visitor's bench for a beautiful goal in the 63rd minute.

About 13 minutes later, Anderson converted another scoring opportunity for the Bulldogs. After settling a pass from sophomore midfielder Emily Falla (Woodinville, WA), Anderson released a shot from outside of the box with precision and velocity to register her second goal of the match for the Bulldogs' 3-1 advantage.

With steady coverage throughout the night, the Maroon and Gray defense remained tough against the Beavers.  Caltech's most dangerous shot came in the 89th minute, but first-year goalkeeper Kennedy Kerr (Bellevue, WA) laid out to make the save. Sophomore Abby Nordquist (Gig Harbor, WA), senior Louisa Alstot (Portland, OR), and first-year Rilee Mezenen (Holladay City, UT) shored up the Bulldog backline that limited the Beavers' options.

Beyond out-shooting Caltech, 17-7, the Maroon and Gray registered seven corner kicks to Caltech's one.

Redlands (2-2-1, 1-0-1 SCIAC) faces a quick turnaround by facing Chapman University on Monday, September 17, in Orange.  Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m.
