REDLANDS, Calif. – The University of Redlands Women's Soccer team (2-9-1, 2-5-1 SCIAC) lost their Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) game 2-1 at Farquhar Field Wednesday evening to the University of La Verne. The Bulldogs had their second goal waved off for an offsides call before the Leopards scored the eventual game-winning goal minutes later.
After nearly five minutes of play with no action, two-time SCIAC Defensive Athlete of the Week
Shannon Stewart (San Jose, CA) was forced into a save in the fifth minute. Then in the 15
th Sami Salinas (Foothill Ranch, CA) had her shot saved as she was looking for her seventh of the season and her sixth in the last four games.
A few minutes later the Leopards made it 1-0 as they snuck a through ball in the box from inside the center circle to a runner who was able to score from inside the 18-yard box.
Salinas continued to put attempts on target as she forced a second save out of the La Verne keeper in the 20
th minute. In the 24
th and 25
th,
Natalie Turiace (San Dimas, CA) took a corner that led to an
Avery Bergschneider (Denver, CO) shot that was blocked and then an attempt that went over the crossbar by Salinas.
Three minutes after that miss over the bar, Salinas found the equalizer for the Bulldogs as she scored her seventh of the season in the 28
th minute. Turiace sent a long ball on the far side to Salinas who was able to dribble into the box and finishing from five yards outside the six and about 10 yards from the endline as her shot beat the keeper hitting off the far post and bouncing into the goal.
In the 32
nd it looked like the Bulldogs were about to take the lead on an own goal when a shot deflected off a Leopard defender, which beat the keeper who was leaning the other way, but the assistant referee called UR offsides, keeping the score deadlocked.
That goal would be big as La Verne scored what would become the game-winning goal less than two minutes later in the 33
rd as they led Redlands 2-1 at the half.
Anika Schmied (Santa Cruz, CA) had the first attempt of the second half for the Maroon and Grey, but the Leopards were the team on the front foot as they had 10 unanswered shots through the 72
nd minute, but Stewart made four saves and the others missed the target as the deficit remained at one.
The rest of the way Redlands was only able to muster four shots, three from
Jessica Chavez (Cayucos, CA), all from distance, and one by Salinas who had her game-tying shot in the 89th minute saved when she won possession on a bouncing ball in the box and then took a shot on the ground to the keepers' right that she saved wide of goal.
The Bulldogs were outshot 25-11 and Stewart finished with eight saves to keep the game competitive. Of Redlands' 11 shots, six came from Salinas and all four shots on-goal came off her foot.
Redlands' job does not get any easier on Saturday, October 14 when they host No. 19 Pomona-Pitzer at 11:00 a.m. for homecoming.
