LANCASTER, Calif. – The University of Redlands Women's Volleyball team (5-9, 1-7 SCIAC) got back in the win column on Thursday evening at West Coast Baptist College (WCBC) as they swept the Eagles 3-0, 25-19, 25-17, 25-21.
The Bulldogs got off to a slow start as they were down two through four points with their first point coming off a
Kaegen Wherry (Englewood, CO) kill. The set would remain competitive early as there were four ties.
Redlands would go on to win three-straight after the final tie at 7-7 as
Lilia Donaldson (Boulder, CO) scored twice followed by
Isabella Garey (Alexandria, VA) adding a kill off assists from
Maddy Schonauer (Bakersfield, CA) and
Lyric Waterman (Aurora, CO) to take a 9-7 lead.
With the Bulldogs trailing by one, 13-12, Schonauer found Wherry for the tying kill, which sparked a 9-2 run as they would get within three points of winning the set, 22-15. During the run
Makaila Brooks (Las Vegas, NV) had two aces,
Paige Sugg (Federal Way, WA) added a kill and
Kiki Stradford (Mission Viejo, CA) finished things off with a solo block and a service ace.
After a mini-run from the Eagles, the Bulldogs took advantage of two errors to close out the first set 25-19.
A pair of WCBC errors and kills from Wherry and Brooks put Redlands up 4-2 early in the second. They would extend that lead to seven, 10-3, as they won seven in-a-row with Sugg and Brooks posting kills, while
Lali Makaiwi (Las Vegas, NV) set up Sugg for her strike.
The great start allowed the Bulldogs to coast home as they won the set 25-17.
Laural Pittman (Los Angeles, CA) started the third set with a pair of aces and the Bulldogs found themselves up 6-0. After 13 points the set had the same scoreline as the second with Redlands leading 10-3. Those last four points came off kills from
Neka Swanberg (Damonte Ranch, NV),
Bailey Hoblitzell (Elk Grove, CA), and Brooks, while
Ella Goettsche (Eastvale, CA) and
Bella Thornbury (Penn Valley, CA) combined for a couple of assists.
With the Bulldogs still leading by seven, 20-13, the Eagles were able to win five-straight and get within two, 20-18. Redlands, however, took advantage of two errors and then won the final two points of the set to close it out 25-21.
Wherry and Brooks finished with six kills each, while Sugg was the third Bulldog with five plus kills. Schonauer had a game-high seven assists and Makaiwi had 11 digs.
After a bye this Friday and Saturday, Redlands will head to Occidental College on Tuesday, October 17 with a 7:00 p.m. start time.
