LOS ANGELES – The University of Redlands Women's Volleyball team (6-9, 2-7 SCIAC) picked up their second-straight win with a sweep at Occidental College in a Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) matchup on Tuesday evening 25-22, 26-24, 25-21. The Bulldogs have now picked up the season sweep over the Tigers.
After an attack error to start the match, the Bulldogs would win nine of the next 10 points as they held an early lead, 9-2.
Makaila Brooks (Las Vegas, NV) had a kill while
Kaegen Wherry and
Avery Aminoff (Alexandria, VA) each recorded two kills, while
Ella Goettsche (Eastvale, CA),
Lali Makaiwi (Las Vegas, NV), and
Maddy Schonauer (Bakersfield, CA) all had assists.
Following the strong start, the Bulldogs allowed the Tigers to get back into it as they conceded a 13-6 run as the set was tied at 15-15. Redlands, however, did not get rattled and grinded out the set by winning 10 of the final 17 points to take the frame 25-22.
After winning the first set and getting off to a quick start, the Bulldogs would battle the Tigers through the first 16 points with six ties occurring early. Wherry had two kills and a service ace while
Lyric Waterman (Aurora, CO) had two assists and
Kiki Stradford (Mission Viejo, CA) with another kill.
Redlands took control after the eight all tie leading by four, 13-9, but Occidental again came back, this time going in front 17-16. The Bulldogs took a timeout and came out of it winning the next three points thanks to an attacking error by the Tigers and kills from Aminoff and
Paige Sugg (Federal Way, WA).
Occidental again made a run as they came back to take a two-point lead, 22-20, and forced another UR timeout. Brooks and Wherry had two unanswered kills to tie the set at 22, but the Tigers would get within one, 24-23, of tying the match, but Redlands won four-straight points securing the set 26-24.
In the third the Tigers maintained control from the start as they won the first point and led by three, 10-7, but the Bulldogs turned the tide and forced Occidental to call a timeout as Redlands won five-straight to go in front for the first time.
Out of the timeout the Bulldogs kept their momentum as they won four more points to take their run to 9-0 as they were up six, 16-10. The end of the set saw the Tigers draw within two, 20-18, but three Wherry kills and another for Brooks closed out the set 25-21.
Wherry had a career-high 19 kills as Waterman added 18 assists and Schonauer with 14. Makaiwi had a game-high 22 digs and
Laural Pittman (Los Angeles, CA) had a season-high 15.
The Bulldogs will return home for the first time in 17 days and four games as they host the current No. 6 team in the country Claremont-Mudd-Scripps inside Currier on Friday at 7:00 p.m.
