REDLANDS, Calif. – The University of Redlands Women's Volleyball team (6-10, 2-8 SCIAC) fell in straight sets 25-17, 25-18, 25-15 to No. 6 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (CMS) in Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) action Friday evening inside Currier Gym.
The Bulldogs got off to a quick start as they won the first two points of the match thanks to an attacking error and a
Kaegen Wherry (Englewood, CO) kill off a
Maddy Schonauer (Bakersfield, CA) assist.
After a pair of Athena errors, the set was tied at four, CMS, though, would win seven of the next nine points to take an 11-6 lead and force a Bulldog timeout.
Redlands would find themselves trailing for the second time, 15-8 but this time around came out of the stoppage winning three of the next four points to get within five, 16-11. The Athenas, however, would right the ship and take the opening set 25-17.
Makaila Brooks (Las Vegas, NV) and
Lali Makaiwi (Las Vegas, NV) opened the scoring in the second set for the Bulldogs with a kill and a service ace to hold an early 2-1 lead in the frame.
Wherry then recorded a pair of kills for a 3-2 lead and a tie at four all. The Athenas responded with three unanswered points soon after, but the Bulldogs would receive a kill from
Kiki Stradford (Mission Viejo, CA) off a
Lyric Waterman (Aurora, CO) assist and a hitting error to get within one, 7-6.
The Bulldogs stayed attached trailing 10-9, 14-12, 17-14, and 20-16, but CMS closed out the set 25-18 thanks to a 4-1 run.
It was a strong start to the third set for the Maroon and Grey thanks to an assisted block from Wherry and
Lilia Donaldson (Boulder, CO). The Bulldogs would take a 4-3 lead off another block, this time coming from Stradford and Wherry.
That was the last lead, though, as CMS jumped out to a six-point advantage, 13-7. The closest Redlands got the rest of the way was five as CMS finished off the match with a 25-15 set win.
Wherry continued her great season with a double double of 14 kills, 11 digs, and two assisted blocks. Waterman had a team-high 13 assists while Schonauer had 11.
The Bulldogs get Saturday off before they head to Claremont, CA to face Pomona-Pitzer on the road on Tuesday, October 24 beginning at 7:00 p.m.
