REDLANDS, Calif. – The University of Redlands Men's Soccer team (10-1-2, 6-1-2 SCIAC) failed to pick up a win for only the third time this season in their 13 games as they took a point from a scoreless draw with the University of La Verne. After a late comeback saw them equalize and win their game with the Leopards on the road last Wednesday, the Bulldogs were unable to find a winner despite outshooting them 29-7.
The Bulldogs still sit atop the conference standings but only have a two-point cushion over Occidental College and Claremont-Mudd-Scripps.
In the first minute and a half
Gabriel Martinez (San Jose, CA) nearly got the Bulldogs on the scoreboard when
Phillip Kostenko (Redmond, WA) put a cross into the box finding the head of Martinez who sent it over the keepers' hands, but it hit the crossbar and was cleared by La Verne.
Kostenko then had his attempt go high in the sixth, followed by a shot wide to the left by
Jarette Barajas (San Jose, CA).
In the 24
th Barajas put the first shot of the game on frame for either team as the Leopard keeper tipped it up and it rebounded back into play off the crossbar.
Over the final 21 minutes of the opening period the Bulldogs outshot the Leopards 7-2 with none of the nine shots forcing saves as it was scoreless at the half.
Redlands started the second 45 quickly as they won a corner kick in the first three minutes, which was taken by
Spencer Palmer (San Diego, CA) who again found the head of Martinez, but his ensuing look would go high over the bar.
Less than two minutes later Kostenko had the best chance of the game as he was inside the box, around the penalty area, and took a shot that beat the keeper, but the Leo goalie was able to tip it enough for it to hit the post and stay out.
Barajas forced another save in the 55th minute as the Bulldogs continued to hold the majority of the possession with the ball staying on the Leopard side of midfield most of the time.
Seth Lawrence (Redlands, CA) made his first save of the game, but it was a comfortable one in the 59
th as the game started to open up in transition for La Verne.
There were a few more shots until
Cody Bell (Highland, CA) had his strike saved in the 66
th.
The big opportunity, and the last really good shot on-goal for the Maroon and Grey, came in the 87
th when
Skylar Darwen (Los Angeles, CA) found himself making a near post move and was able to get a shot off from only a few yards out, but the attempt was saved and sent just outside the post for a corner that did not turn into anything as the game would come to an end after Bell forced one last save with :32 seconds remaining.
Kostenko had a game-high seven shots, the same as the Leopards as a team. Barajas and Bell each had two shots saved as Redlands hit the post, crossbar, and forced five saves.
The Bulldogs will now prepare to host Chapman University on Saturday night, October 21 at 7:00 p.m. as they celebrate senior night in game two of a doubleheader with the women's team.
