Men's Soccer Displays Offensive Juggernaut in 5-0 rout of Chapman on Senior Night

REDLANDS, Calif. – The University of Redlands Men's Soccer team honored their eight seniors (Seth Lawrence (Redlands, CA), Gabriel Martinez (San Jose, CA), Jarette Barajas (San Jose, CA), Skylar Darwen (Los Angeles, CA), Erik George (Brea, CA), Spencer Palmer (San Diego, CA), Jacob Sattler (Pasadena, CA), and Aidan McSweeny (San Diego, CA)) and proceeded to rout Chapman University 5-0 at Farquhar Field Saturday night.

Redlands improves to 11-1-2, 7-1-2 SCIAC and picked up a much needed three points to keep their two-point advantage over Occidental College within the conference standings.

The Bulldogs did not waste much time as Cody Bell scored his fourth of the season in the sixth minute as Phillip Kostenko (Redmond, WA) found himself deep on the left flank before serving in a cross to the far side finding Martinez who took a touch into the path of Bell who pounced on the layoff and smashing it in from eight yards out.

Palmer then scored his sixth of the season in the 28th minute as he extended his career high,  Darwen found Anders Beckton (Seattle, WA) on the left flank.  Beckton turned his defender and served in a cross high to the back side of the box where Palmer was waiting.  Palmer then unleashed a volley out of the air low and past the Chapman keeper from 17-yards out.

Taylor Bell (Highland, CA) then scored his first collegiate goal off another Beckton assist in the 41st as the Bulldogs had three goals in the first half after being held to a scoreless draw only three days ago.  A throw in down the left flank again found Beckton who turned and ripped a low shot at the keeper from a tight angle.  The CU keeper got a hand to it but the rebound fell to T. Bell for a tap in at the goal line.

Less than three minutes into the second 45 Martinez joined the scoring effort, his fourth on the season to make it 4-0. Palmer served a corner kick to the back post zone where Martinez was waiting.  Martinez then crushed a half volley into the top of the net from eight yards out.  The final connection for the Maroon and Grey came three minutes later from Barajas.  C. Bell had the ball on the right flank before cutting a pass inside to Palmer, who sent a beautiful first-time curling pass to the left flank to Barajas who had slipped behind the Chapman backline.  He then took a touch and ripped a low shot to the bottom right post.

In the 53rd minute Lawrence made his first save of the night as he kept the shutout for the Bulldogs. After Lawrence was subbed off by Brady Bachman (San Diego, CA) who was untested, Jason Salmeron (Winnetka, CA) came into the game and three minutes later he made a diving play to his left that preserved the clean sheet.

Lawrence only needed one save in his nearly 69 minutes of action. Fellow seniors Martinez, Barajas, and Palmer all scored, and Martinez and Palmer added assists.

The Bulldogs will have a matchup with second place Occidental College on the road in Los Angeles this coming Wednesday, October 25 with kickoff against the Tigers at 7:00 p.m. A win would secure the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) regular season title and the No. 1 seed in the upcoming SCIAC Tournament.
