Redlands Women's Volleyball falls in four-setter at Pomona-Pitzer

CLAREMONT, Calif. – The University of Redlands Women's Volleyball team (6-11, 2-9 SCIAC) fell in four sets, 25-19, 25-22, 26-28, 25-20 at Pomona-Pitzer Tuesday evening as they lost the three sets by a combined 14 points.

The Bulldogs got off to a terrific start as they led by five, 6-1, through seven points. Maddy Schonauer (Bakersfield, CA), Kaegen Wherry (Englewood, CO), and Avery Aminoff (Alexandria, VA) all had kills while Lyric Waterman (Aurora, CO) added a service ace.

Redlands maintained their lead until Pomona-Pitzer went on a 4-0 run to take a 13-12 lead. A pair of errors from the Sagehens and a kill for Wherry made it 15-13 Bulldogs. An 11-4 run for Pomona-Pitzer, though, finished off the first set for the Sagehens, 25-19.

Redlands matched their great start in the first set again in the second as they again led 6-1. Three Sagehen errors, a kill and an ace for Lali Makaiwi (Las Vegas, NV) helped build the lead.

The advantage grew to six, 10-4, after Waterman assisted Wherry and Aminoff on kills. A 10-1 Sagehen run, though, made it a 14-11 UR deficit.

Down the stretch Redlands found themselves down five set points, 24-19, but they continued to battle, winning three-straight, highlighted by a service ace by Kiki Stradford (Mission Viejo, CA), but Pomona-Pitzer would finish things off 25-22.

The third set was competitive from the start with ties on five different occasions early. After the competitive start, Stradford had a kill off a Schonauer set which made it a seven-point differential 16-9.

With a fourth set within four points, 21-15, for the Bulldogs, the Sagehens won eight of the next nine to get themselves within one of a match point, 23-22. But kills from Stradford and an assisted block by Wherry and Stradford saved two match points for the Maroon and Grey before extending the match following the 28-26 victory.

The Bulldogs and Sagehens were tied in the fourth at six, but another 10-1 run for PP made it a nine-point deficit which ended up being too large of a hole to climb out of despite a late 4-0 run that made it competitive late. Isabella Garey (Alexandria, VA) picked up her first kill during that late run.

The Bulldogs will look to get back on track when they return to Currier Gym for another SCIAC matchup against No. 21 University of La Verne this Friday, October 27 beginning at 7:00 p.m.
