LOS ANGELES, Calif. – The game for the University of Redlands Men's Soccer team (11-2-2, 7-2-2 SCIAC) at Occidental College started perfectly with a
Phillip Kostenko (Redmond, WA) goal off a
Gabriel Martinez (San Jose, CA) assist in the sixth minute. But the Tigers would add a pair coming in the 43
rd and 69
th minutes to secure a 2-1 win moving them into first place in the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) standings.
Three seconds before Kostenko made it 1-0, Martinez cracked a shot from 25-yards out that hit the crossbar. The attempt ricocheted right to Kostenko for his first goal since he scored a brace at Whittier to end September. For Martinez he nearly scored last Wednesday against La Verne as his header hit off the crossbar too.
Redlands stayed on the front foot after the goal as they won a corner kick just over a minute later. Then in the 12
th and 13
th minutes
Skylar Darwen (Los Angeles, CA) had his shot blocked and
Cody Bell (Highland, CA) missed wide of the goal.
Seth Lawrence (Redlands, CA) was called upon for the first time in the 16th minute as he made a save to maintain the lead. After a shot block and a corner for the Tigers, Lawrence made his second stop of the game in the 20
th.
Following some substitutes, Martinez had another shot get denied as this time his attempt was on target, but the save was made by the Tiger keeper in the 29
th minute. The save would yield a pair of corner opportunities and eventually a second shot on-goal, this time coming from
Jarette Barajas (San Jose, CA) who was unable to beat the keeper.
After some time without any clear cut chances for either side, Lawrence made a save in the 42
nd minute. Occidental, however, would even the scoreline at one with a goal :70 seconds later as the two sides would go into the half the way they started, tied.
The second half was the inverse of the first with the Tigers starting out aggressively with four shots and a corner in the opening four minutes as the Bulldogs' defense blocked three attempts and Lawrence made his third save.
After not having a shot find its way on-goal since the 31
st minute, Darwen tested the Tiger keeper in the 66th minute, but again the attempt was handled as the game stayed deadlocked.
The tie would not last much longer as Occidental would take advantage of a corner kick scoring the eventual game winner in the 69th minute.
After getting shot opportunities left and right to start the game, the final 21 minutes saw the Bulldogs only get three shots off with an equalizer look from
Anders Beckton (Seattle, WA) with seconds remaining. Beckton was able to slip past the backline chasing down a ball just inside the box and was pressured by the Tiger keeper who came off his mark, He was able to get a foot on it and flip it up and over the keeper towards the goal but it would miss by two feet left of the side post allowing Oxy to escape with the win.
The Bulldogs forced three saves in the game, but only one in the final 59 minutes. Martinez had a game-high three shots and Darwen and Kostenko each had two.
Redlands ends their regular season with an important road trip to California Lutheran University this Saturday, October 28 with kickoff set for 10:30 a.m.
