ORANGE, Calif. – The University of Redlands Women's Soccer team (2-12-2, 2-7-2 SCIAC) dropped a 2-0 decision on the road at Chapman University Wednesday evening and it could have been a larger margin thanks to goalkeeper
Shannon Stewart (San Jose, CA) who made a career-high 22 saves which are now the second most in program history and three off the record held by Kim Stafford against Cal Baptist back in 1996. It also brings her save total to 112 this season, the second most in single-season history and five off the record held by Hannah Menk from 2016.
The saves started early for Stewart as she was forced into her first in the third minute and then her second in the sixth. The Bulldogs picked up their first attempt of the game from
Julianna Ortega (Whittier, CA) who had her shot miss wide left.
After a shot from
Malia Kuhl (Seattle, WA) also missed wide left, Stewart made another three saves from the ninth minute through the 13
th as she kept the game scoreless.
Natalie Turiace (San Dimas, CA) was able to put the first Bulldog shot on-goal in the 19
th minute, but it was handled by the Panther keeper. The next time down for CU Stewart made another stop and she would end the first half with 14 saves, which tied her career high, also helping keep the game scoreless after 45:00 minutes.
In the second 45 Stewart made another three stops before Kuhl had her shot in the center of the goal saved in the 54th minute.
The great work by Stewart was finally beaten by Chapman as they made it 1-0 in the 57
th minute. Another five saves kept the Bulldogs within one, but the Panthers saw their second find the back of the goal in the 82
nd.
The fourth and final shot on-goal for Redlands came in the 84
th as
Sami Salinas' (Foothill Ranch, CA) shot on the ground was stopped as the Bulldogs were held off the scoreboard.
Stewart faced 37 shots, 24 of which were on target. The defense also had to defend five corner kicks.
The Bulldogs will end their season with senior day this Saturday at 11:00 a.m. as they host Claremont-Mudd-Scripps at Farquhar Field.
