THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. – The University of Redlands Women's Volleyball team (6-13, 2-11 SCIAC) lost in straight sets to California Lutheran University (CLU) 3-0 Saturday night.
The Bulldogs took some of their momentum from a strong showing Friday night jumping out to a 5-1 lead.
Makaila Brooks (Las Vegas, NV) and
Kaegan Wherry (Ebglewood, CO) had kills with
Maddy Schonauer (Bakersfield, CA) and
Laural Pittman (Los Angeles, CA) picking up assists.
Redlands would extend their lead to eight, 10-2 thanks to a 4-0 run that saw the Regals commit four consecutive errors, one of which was forced thanks to an assisted block from
Avery Aminoff (Alexandria, VA) and
Kiki Stradford (Mission Viejo, CA).
Isabella Garey (Alexandria, VA) had a pair of kills off a Pittman and
Lyric Waterman (Aurora, CO) assist to make it 13-6, but CLU would win the next 10 points as the Bulldogs trailed for the first time, 15-13. Redlands would tie the set at 15 and 17 but CLU finished the set off 25-19.
After a great start but slow finish in the first, the second set started with the Regals winning the first five points, the Bulldogs, however, went on a 5-0 run of their own to tie the set at five. During the run Brooks had a solo block, Wherry had a kill, and Pittman with an ace.
Following three early ties the Regals slowly started to build a lead that ended with them winning the set 25-18 and taking a 2-0 lead into the third.
Eight of the first nine points were won by CLU to begin the third set, but the Bulldogs earned a pair of blocks, a kill from Wherry and Stradford, and
Ella Goettsche (Eastvale, CA) added an ace to help the Bulldogs tie the set at eight.
Much like the end of the second set, CLU would finish off the frame by winning more points in short stretches that allowed them to win the set by five, 25-20.
Pittman finished with a season-high 21 digs while Wherry and Stradford had 13 and eight kills apiece. Schonauer finished with 12 assists.
Redlands will play their final week of the season this week as they play twice at home and once on the road with the first game of the week inside Currier Gym on Tuesday, October 31 at 7:00 p.m. as they host Whittier College.
