REDLANDS, Calif. – The University of Redlands Men's Soccer team ended their regular season 12-2-2, 8-2-2 inside Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) play, which placed them second in the final SCIAC standings giving them a home game for the SCIAC Tournament Semi-Finals against No. 3 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (CMS). The Bulldogs and Stags will play at Farquhar Field at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, November 1.
In the other semifinal No. 1 Occidental College will host No. 4 California Lutheran University (CLU). The highest remaining seed will host the final on Saturday, November 4.
University of Redlands
The four games where the Bulldogs did not pull off a win this season came against Occidental twice, a 2-0 loss at home and a 2-1 road loss, a 1-1 home draw against Pomona-Pitzer, and a home scoreless draw against the University of La Verne (ULV).
Redlands as a team led SCIAC with 31 goals during conference play and tied Occidental for the fewest allowed with 11 thanks to the best save percentage from their goalkeepers at .771.
Individually
Spencer Palmer (San Diego, CA) and
Jarette Barajas (San Jose, CA) each tied for third with seven goals. Palmer led the conference with four game-winning goals. Four Bulldogs finished in the top-five in assists with three:
Gabriel Martinez (San Jose, CA), Palmer,
Anders Beckton (Seattle, WA), and Barajas.
In goal
Seth Lawrence (Redlands, CA) had the second lowest goal against average (GAA) at 1.01. His .756 save percentage was joint best during conference play and his 2.82 saves per game are eighth highest.
The All-SCIAC awards were announced Wednesday with the Bulldogs seeing Barajas being named the SCIAC Offensive Player of the Year. They then had three land on the 1st Team in Barajas, Lawrence, Palmer and then
Skylar Darwen (Los Angeles, CA),
Jacob Sattler (Pasadena, CA), and
Phillip Kostenko (Redmond, WA) earning 2nd Team recognition.
Claremont-Mudd-Scripps
The Stags finished their season 8-3-5, 5-3-4 in SCIAC. The seven non-wins included a 1-1 draw at home against CLU, a 1-0 road loss at Chapman University and a 0-0 draw at home against the Panthers, a 2-1 loss at Redlands, a 1-1 draw at home against ULV, a 3-1 home loss to Pomona-Pitzer, and a 1-1 road draw at the California Institute of Technology.
CMS was tied with Pomona-Pitzer for third in scoring with 24 goals and they allowed 13 goals, the third fewest.
Leading the Stags' offense is
James Gomez who finished the season with six goals good for a tie for sixth in SCIAC. Rafael Otero also scored five goals while attempting 37 shots, third most in SCIAC, and 17 of those were on goal, also third most. Two of Otero's goals are game-winning, the second most.
In goal
Kevin Box posted the third lowest GAA at 1.14. He has played almost 1102 minutes, the most during conference play. He made 37 saves, the most, while posting a .725 save percentage, fourth highest.
The Stags had three players earn All-SCIAC recognition with Shawn Malik and Rafael Otero landing on the 1st Team and James Gomez on the 2nd Team.
Head-to-Head
The Bulldogs won the lone meeting with the Stags 2-1 (

Recap) back in September at Farquhar Field. Since the end of the pandemic, the Bulldogs are 2-1-1 against CMS. Last season they had a scoreless draw and in 2021 they played twice with UR losing 2-1 in the regular season before taking the 2-1 victory during the SCIAC Tournament final sending them to the NCAA Division III National Championships. Overall, the Bulldogs hold the all-time advantage against the Stags at 31-13-5 and 20-4-4 at Farquhar.
