PASADENA, Calif. – The University of Redlands Men's Soccer team (8-1-1, 4-1-1 SCIAC) scored four second half goals as they beat the California Institute of Technology (CIT) 4-0 in Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) action Wednesday afternoon.
It was a busy start for both defenses as
Jarette Barajas (San Jose, CA) hit the post in the second minute followed by CIT with their shot being saved by
Seth Lawrence (Redlands, CA) in the third minute, and then
Phillip Kostenko's (Redmond, WA) attempt from inside the box being blocked in the 10
th.
Two minutes later Lawrence made another save as the Beavers took a shot from the top of the 18-yard box. A few minutes later
Skylar Darwen (Los Angeles, CA) had his header stopped from inside the box. Lawrence then stepped up to make a third save of the game just over a minute later.
Both teams traded opportunities, but neither were able to test each other's keeper until
Anders Beckton (Seattle, WA) had his shot saved from the right wing in the box.
Ending the half was the Redlands' defense blocking a CIT shot, Lawrence making one final save, and then
Owen Jamieson (Danville, CA) and
Terren Reyes (Chula Vista, CA) each missing attempts inside the box over the final two minutes.
The Bulldogs' persistence paid off less than three minutes into the second half as
Spencer Palmer (San Diego, CA) scored his third of the season off a Darwen assist in the 48
th. Darwen whipped in a cross to the six-yard box where Palmer was able to flick it on frame.
Darwen had his own attempt saved in the 50th minute, as did Kostenko in the 62
nd. But the second goal came in the 73
rd as
Cody Bell (Highland, CA) was found by
Connor Claborn (Santa Clarita, CA) as the back-post header made it 2-0.
Things really got cooking for the offense over the next six minutes as
Erik Davies (Snoqualmie, WA) scored his first collegiate goal in the 75
th off a Palmer assist and then Beckton made it 4-0 in the 79
th as Reyes picked up his first collegiate assist.
Davies goal came on a header after Palmer took a corner kick and the Beckton's goal came after Reyes' long ball made it over the Beaver's backline and found Anders who was able to slot it past the keeper for the final score of the game.
Despite the scoreline, the game was competitive from a statistical perspective as the Bulldogs only held a three-shot advantage (15-12), though they did get four more shots on-goal (8-4) and took three more corners (7-4).
Lawrence started and played the first 45 and made four saves and
Brady Bachman (San Diego, CA) finished the final 45 without needing to make any stops.
The Bulldogs return to Farquhar Field this Saturday, October 7 at 1:00 p.m. as they host California Lutheran University who currently sits in third place right behind the Bulldogs.
