REDLANDS, Calif. – The University of Redlands Men's Soccer team (12-2-3, 8-2-2 SCIAC) put on a show Wednesday night in front a raucous crowd at Farquhar Field in the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) Tournament Semi-Final playing Claremont-Mudd-Scripps to a 1-1 draw before edging the Stags 5-4 on PK's advancing them to the SCIAC Tournament Final Saturday night.
Following 110 minutes of play the game was in a stalemate at 1-1 after a full 90:00 minutes of regulation and a pair of ten minute overtime periods. That then led to penalty kicks, which the Maroon and Grey would come from behind in to hold off the Stags. But this situation would not have occurred if it was not for junior
Phillip Kostenko (Redmond, WA) who scored the equalizer with 3:13 to play.
The first shot of the game came from 2nd Team All-SCIAC member Kostenko in the sixth minute as his attempt was blocked. Less than a minute later the Stags transitioned down the field and earned their first attempt of the game as 2nd Team All-SCIAC keeper
Seth Lawrence (Redlands, CA) was able to make the stop.
CMS would have the first good look on goal in the 29
th minute when a shot from the left side of the six-yard box got past Lawrence and was on target for an open goal, but first-year defender
Terren Reyes (Chula Vista, CA) was able to come in and make a defensive stop sliding in to clear it keeping the Stags off the scoreboard.
SCIAC Offensive Athlete of the Year and 1st Team All-SCIAC performer
Jarette Barajas (San Jose, CA) put his first shot of the game on frame in the 34
th minute, but it was handled by the Stag keeper as the game was scoreless after 45 minutes.
Only four minutes into the second half CMS was able to connect scoring the go-ahead goal taking advantage of a free kick just outside the box, which went under the leg of a Stag player and was able to sneak into the far right corner of the goal.
Seven of the next ten shots came from Redlands who were only able to put one on target as the save was made in goal for Kevin Box. Lawrence also made another save during that period as CMS led 1-0 through 77 minutes.
Ten minutes later Kostenko was able to fight his way into the box taking a shot that would be saved by Box, but the ensuing rebound bounced right back to him, which he was able to tap over the keeper's hands for the equalizer. The rest of the half saw no shots on-goal as the two teams went to overtime tied at one.
Opening up the first OT period
Anders Beckton (Seatlle, WA) forced a save out of Box, but it was the only dangerous opportunity for either side across the opening ten minutes.
In the second overtime
Owen Jamieson (Danville, CA) earned a header off a
Spencer Palmer (San Diego, CA) corner in the 107
th, but the shot was saved as the two teams ended in a 1-1 tie with penalty kicks to decide who advanced.
In the shootout the Bulldogs elected to go first leading things off with Barajas who would bury his attempt to put UR on top. After CMS converted their first Beckton came up and had his look hit the crossbar allowing the Stags to make their second penalty and go in front 2-1.
Jacob Sattler (Pasadena, CA) followed with a conversion that put two up for the Bulldogs, but CMS would respond to hold the slight advantage 3-2 after three rounds. Palmer stepped up and buried his try and with the chance to go up 4-3, the Stags attempts would get blocked by Lawrence who made the stop in the center of goal.
With a pair of must make penalties,
Gabriel Martinez (San Jose, CA) and
Landon Azavedo (Portland, OR) would each convert, as did the fifth CMS taker as Redlands led 5-4 with the Stags looking to even the score in the sixth round. CMS' sixth PK was headed to the bottom right corner of the goal but it would be Lawrence who was able to get his hands to the shot for the denial as he won the game with his second save of the shootout.
The Bulldogs advance to the SCIAC Tournament Final, which will be hosted by the No. 1 seed Occidental College who beat California Lutheran University 3-0 in the other SCIAC Semi-Final. The game will kick off at 7:00 p.m. on Saturday, November 4 in the third matchup between these two teams on the season and the second over the past ten days.
