THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. – The University of Redlands Men's Basketball team (5-2, 0-1 SCIAC) returned to non-conference play with a 101-58 blowout win over Kalamazoo College on Monday evening in a game hosted by California Lutheran University.
Redlands got off to a quick start with Sam Abere (Lake Oswego, OR) knocking down a jumper on a fastbreak, which then led to a 7-0 run to begin the game. The next two baskets came from Jhace Boston (Bakersfield, CA) who hit a three off an Abere assist and Khyree Armstead (Mountlake Terrace, WA) who was also assisted by Abere on a basket in the paint.
The first double-digit lead for Redlands came inside of the first six minutes as they led 15-3 after Power made a three off an Armstead assist.
Kalamazoo would score 10 of the next 14 points to pull within within six, 19-13, but the Maroon and Grey would respond with a 14-2 surge to push the lead to 18, 33-15, with 7:07 left in the half.
The Hornets continued to battle getting within ten, 33-23, two minutes later, but UR would end the half scoring 16 of the final 21 points as they led by 21, 49-28, as Abere ended the half the way he started with the final two points.
Kendrick Currey (Manteca, CA) opened the second half with the first points as the Bulldogs scored the opening six with Armstead and Boston each adding a pair of buckets.
Cameron Joseph (Fairfield, CA) gave the Bulldogs their first 30-point lead with 11:53 on the clock as Boston found him for a three, pushing the margin to 67-36.
Redlands would control the game the rest of the way as they won by 43, including leading by as many as 46, 101-55, after Joseph made a pair of free throws.
Boston, Joseph, Ivan Belkin (Encino, CA), and Malachi Miller (Modesto, CA) all scored in double figures as all 12 Bulldogs found their way on the scoresheet. The Bulldogs finished with 24 steals. Currey had five steals while Miller and Cameron Brown (Bakersfield, CA) each recorded four.
Redlands will finish their two-game stint with a match-up against Illinois Wesleyan University Tuesday night at 5:00 p.m. in Thousand Oaks.
