Redlands Men's Basketball drops their SCIAC opener to California Lutheran 74-65

REDLANDS, Calif. – The University of Redlands Men's Basketball team (4-2, 0-1 SCIAC) dropped their Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) opener to California Lutheran University (CLU) 74-65 on Saturday afternoon inside Currier Gym.

The game was deadlocked on three different occasions across the first four minutes. Kendrick Currey (Manteca, CA) had five points and Khyree Armstead (Mountlake Terrace.WA), Robert Power (Pacific Palisades, CA), and Cameron Brown (Bakersfield, CA) each chipped in two.

A layup in the paint by Pharaoh Amadi (Dallas, TX) and a made free throw by Brown made it a four-point lead for UR, 15-11, with 14:52 remaining in the half.

After the multi-possession lead, the Kingsmen went on a 15-4 run as they took their largest lead of the game at seven, 26-19, with 7:10 on the clock. The Bulldogs, though, were able to regain the momentum and lead by as many as four, 36-32, and were up by two at the half.

It was a back-and-forth start to the second half as each team held multiple leads, while the Bulldogs found themselves up six, 62-56, with less than nine minutes to play. That lead, however, was lost with 3:21 on the clock as a Kingsmen three put them on top 65-63, a lead they would maintain the rest of the way as they beat the Bulldogs by nine.

Currey finished with his first double-double of his Bulldog career as he led the team with 17 points (6-24 FG, 4-6 FT) and 10 rebounds, while adding five assists. Brown was the only other player in double figures with 13 points (2-4 FG, 9-10 FT).

The Bulldogs will now prepare for a pair of road games in Thousand Oaks, CA next week, Monday-Tuesday, December 18-19 when they take on Kalamazoo College (7:00pm) and No. 20 Illinois Wesleyan University (5:00pm).
