Redlands Men's Soccer wins season opener 4-1 over Bethesda

REDLANDS, Calif. – The University of Redlands Men's Soccer team won their season opener at Farquhar Field 4-1 over Bethesda University (BU) on Friday evening. The Bulldogs were in a 1-1 tie early in the second half before three well worked goals between the 55th and 69th minutes put the game away.

In the first 45 minutes the Bulldogs held a 14-2 shot advantage, forced six saves from the Bethesda keeper, while Brady Bachman (San Diego, CA) did not have to make a stop.  UR also added three corners but saw that their lead was only one.

That lone goal was a beauty. Redlands won a free kick on a foul about 25 yards out and Spencer Palmer (San Diego, CA) took the kick and sent it to the six yard box where Owen Jamieson (Danville, CA) was waiting finishing off a contested header over the keeper for the season-opening goal.

The equalizer came in the 52nd minute when a rebound off Jason Salmeron's (Winnetka, CA) hands coming on a 1v1 deflected to an open BU player who slotted it home.

Just over three minutes later Jarette Barajas (San Jose, CA) scored on a transition opportunity that started in the Bulldogs defensive half. Skylar Darwen (Los Angeles, CA) was the second player on the ball and after a heavy touch gave a BU player a chance to play it, he would reach out and touch it in front of Barajas who would then carry it into the box before finishing.

The final two goals came from Cody Bell (Highland, CA) and Phillip Kostenko (Redmond, WA) who each scored and assisted on each other's goal. The first score was in the 65th minute when Kostenko fed Bell in the box.  Bell then returned the favor in 69th as the Bulldogs took firm control of the game 4-1.

After 90 minutes the Bulldogs finished with a plus 24 shot advantage (31-7), forced five more saves (7-2), had eight more shots on-goal (11-3), but they did commit 14 fouls (14-10) and were given three yellow cards.

The Bulldogs play at home against UC Santa Cruz on Sunday, September 3 at 7:00 p.m.
