Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

U of R Men's Soccer wins thriller 4-3 over UC Santa Cruz

REDLANDS, Calif. – The University of Redlands Men's Soccer team pulled off their second straight victory holding onto a 3-0 lead as they beat UC Santa Cruz 4-3 on Sunday evening at Farquhar Field.

It was an exciting game with the opening goal coming in the 13th minute when Phillip Kostenko (Redmond, WA) put away a ball right off the goal line being sent in by Gabriel Martinez (San Jose, CA) following a carry into the box and a shot that was touched by the Banana Slug keeper.

Despite other opportunities in the first half, the Bulldogs settled for a 1-0 halftime lead. Things changed in the first six minutes of the second 45 as Cody Bell (Highland, CA) and Owen Jamieson (Danville, CA) would find the back of the net making it 3-0.

Bell's goal was assisted by Skylar Darwen (Los Angeles, CA) who, like Friday, chipped a potential 50/50 ball forward to Bell who scored from a tight angle inside the box. Jamieson's was off a free kick by Spencer Palmer (San Diego, CA) that he drove and found the far corner netting.

UCSC made it a game in the middle of the second half as they scored twice, once in the 74th and then in the 77th, as Redlands held a one-goal advantage with more than 13 minutes to play.

After making some changes to get starters back on the field, it was freshman Anders Beckton (Seattle, WA) who gave them some extra breathing room as he scored what would be the game-winning goal in the 80th. Beckton was closer to the end line than he was to the near post, but he somehow beat the keeper and found the top corner just inside the far post for making it a two score lead, 4-2.

The Banana Slugs kept coming as they made it a one-goal game again in the 85th, but the Bulldogs were able to do just enough to close out the win.

As a team the Bulldogs had a 14-10 shot advantage, but they were minus five (5-10) in shots in the second half after they did not allow a single shot in the first 45.

Redlands remains at home as they host LIFE Pacific this Friday, September 8 at 7:00 p.m. at Farquhar Field.
