REDLANDS, Calif. – The University of Redlands Women's Soccer team held a 2-0 lead over the Panthers of Chapman University Wednesday night but failed to hold on as they would salvage a draw and a point in their Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) Opener.
The Bulldogs are still searching for their first win of 2023 as they move to 0-4-1, while Chapman picks up their third tie at 1-0-3.
Redlands defended an early attack by the Panthers to start the game but then turned into the aggressors in the 15
th minute thanks to
Natalie Turiace (Claremont, CA) who found space 30-yards out off a pass from
Malia Kuhl (Seattle, WA) before bending in a shot that found its way into the upper 90 putting UR on top early.
After a pair of corner kicks from CU the Maroon and Grey tacked on another in the 23
rd minute this time off the foot of first-year
Jaiden Riodil (Tigard, OR) who received a through ball at the corner of the box before beating a defender and taking the goalie on 1v1 who she would beat to the bottom right corner of the goal.
This lead would hold the rest of the half despite Bulldog keeper
Shannon Stewart (San Jose, CA) facing eight shots across the next 22:00 minutes three of which forced her into save opportunities.
Out of the break the U of R defensive back-line held strong for the first 15:00 minutes until the Panthers capitalized on a corner kick, which put a ball in front of the goal, which was finished by MJ Smith through traffic. For the next 23:00 minutes UR played tough despite an offensive push by the Panthers. Stewart made another four saves between the posts and the offense tried to keep up the intensity by putting two shots on frame as well from
Sami Salinas (Foothill Ranch, CA) and Kuhl.
With less than ten minutes to play Chapman found the equalizer in the 84
th minute thanks to Andrea Aldama who was sent a ball above the box from Quinn Barrett. Aldama one-timed the pass from 40-yards out connecting just inside the crossbar, tying the game up at 2-2.
Redlands took 13 shots for the game with eight being on goal. Stewart played all 90:00 minutes finishing with nine saves. Riodil and Turiace combined for both goals and five shots, four of which were on goal. Salinas added another two shots on frame and Kuhl with an assist and two shots, also both on goal.
Redlands has this Saturday off but will remain in SCIAC play next week, Wednesday, September 20 when they travel to take on Claremont-Mudd-Scripps beginning at 7:00pm.
