CLAREMONT, Calif. – Shannon Stewart (San Jose, CA) made nine saves as the Bulldogs' (1-4-1, 1-0-1 SCIAC) defensive unit pitched a shutout on the road at Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Wednesday evening as they earned their first win of the season thanks to a first half own goal.
That own goal came very early on for the Bulldogs who sent a ball into the box on a cross in the eighth minute finding an Athena defender who redirected the ball into the back of the net from about 15 yards out giving UR the eventual game-winner.
Each team traded a shot that was off target in the subsequent minutes, but in the 17
th Stewart was forced into her first save of the game.
Stewart was able to come up with another three stops the remainder of the half as she helped keep the Bulldogs 1-0 lead through 45.
In the second half the Athenas took the first three shots, two of which required saves from Stewart, the first coming in the 49
th minute and the second in the 53
rd.
Sami Salinas (Foothill Ranch, CA) was able to test the CMS keeper with a shot that was stopped :25 seconds after Stewart picked up a save as the Bulldogs offense transitioned well.
The defense settled down as they did not allow a shot on target until the 76
th minute when Stewart made another game-saving stop. After a number of subs came up on both sides CMS made their final push when they forced two more saves in the 86
th, both coming :53 seconds apart.
Statistically after the 1-0 scoreline the Bulldogs did well to handle 19 shots against them with nine of them on target. The Bulldogs took four shots with two on goal, Redlands was also at a seven corner-kick disadvantage (9-1), but they drew eight more fouls (13-5) which helped them control the pace of play.
Salinas led the way offensively with a team-high three shots, one on target with
Malia Kuhl (Seattle, WA) finishing with another.
With the win Redlands breaks into the win column after nearly doing so last Wednesday at Farquhar Field against Chapman University. The Bulldogs now sit in third place through two SCIAC games and prepare to travel to Los Angeles to take on Occidental College on Saturday, September 23 beginning at 7:00 p.m. The Tigers are 3-1-2, 1-1-1 SCIAC, tied for fourth.
