Redlands Football Threatens No. 8 Linfield Falling 17-10

REDLANDS, Calif. – The University of Redlands Football team nearly pulled off an upset win Saturday night inside Ted Runner Stadium in front of a crowd of almost 2,000 falling 17-10 to Linfield University.

The Bulldogs are 1-1 now on the season, while Linfield improves to 2-0.

It was a defensive battle all night with the Maroon and Grey proving to be a tough match-up for the Wildcats.  Redlands finished with 240 yards of total offense and ran four more plays than Linfield.  UR had 165 yards through the air and another 75 on the ground.  They averaged 3.6 yards per play and had 17 first downs.

A pair of three and outs started the game off for both teams.  Then on Linfield's second possession they would put together a 10-play, 50 yard drive that spanned 6:49 ending on a 4th and Goal conversion from the one-yard line giving them an early 7-0 lead.  Following another three and out by UR, Linfield began another strong drive this time going 8-plays, for 49-yards, but this time on their 4th and 3 conversion they would be stopped by the Bulldog front turning the ball over on downs.

Redlands used this momentum to move the ball down the field covering 46-yards on 9-plays, but the drive would stall on the LIN43 on 4th and 4 when Tyler Tremain (Folsom, CA) was picked-off.  The next possession for UR they would sustain the lengthy drive going 74-yards in 17-plays ending with a 23-yard field goal from Vicente Garcia (Fontana, CA).  During the drive Calel Olicia-Aramboles (Westfield, IN) rushed seven times for 20 yards and Tremain hooked up with Seth Weller (Olympia, WA) on a pair of completions for 13-yards and 21-yards.

With 1:07 remaining in the half Linfield put together one last drive covering 46-yards in 11-plays ending with a career long 51-yard field goal for the Wildcats' Gavin Dalziel moving the score to 10-3 at the half.

Following three empty possessions to open the 3rd Quarter Linfield got the scoring started with 6:35 to play going 67-yards on 12-plays ending with a 1-yard touchdown catch by Devon Murray.  This would put the Wildcats on top 17-3, but after that the Redlands defensive unit would shut them down keeping UR in striking distance.

In the 4th Quarter Redlands managed just one score, which ended a 19-play, 90-yard drive that spanned 6:50.  Tremain had the highlight reel run on 3rd and Goal from the 15-yard line using his legs to find the endzone bringing UR within seven.  But this comeback would come up short as Linfield would run the clock out surviving a regional road non-conference match-up.

Jacob Sega (Oceanside, CA) led the defensive unit with nine tackles (3 Solo/6 Assisted).  Laurence Williams (Corona, CA) added eight, all solo and Elijah Valles (Oceanside, CA) and Matthew Lising (San Diego, CA) combined for ten tackles.  Jae Thorn was a difference maker putting up four tackles to go with a sack and 1.5 TFL's.  Scott Tinsley (Capitola, CA) put up four tackles (3 Solo/1 Assisted) along with helping on a TFL.

Tremain finished 17-for-35 for 165 yards, while rushing for another 34 yards and a touchdown.  Tony Williams Jr. (Indio, CA) led the ground attack with 13 rushes for 54 yards, averaging 3.4 yards per rush.  He also caught five balls out of the backfield for another 32 yards.  Evan Aguon (San Diego, CA) and Weller combined for six receptions and 44 yards a piece receiving.

Garcia had a solid night punting totaling five for 208 yards, averaging 41.6 yards per punt with a long being for 56 yards and one that landed inside the 20.

Redlands enters Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) play next Saturday, September 23 when they travel to Orange County to take on Chapman University beginning at 7:00pm.
