Bulldog Football takes down Pacific Lutheran 24-14 in season opener

TACOMA, Wash. – The University of Redlands Football team traveled to Tacoma, WA Saturday to take on Pacific Lutheran University in a non-conference battle pulling out a 24-14 victory.

The Bulldogs and Lutes have only played three times since 2012 with the previous two meetings occurring in 2012 (L, 28-14) and 2013 (L, 35-14), both ending in losses for the Maroon and Grey.

After a scoreless opening quarter the two teams combined for 21 points in the second with PLU taking a 14-7 lead into the break.  Out of the half the U of R defensive unit held tough keeping the Lutes scoreless across the final 30:00 minutes, while adding 17 points, ten of which came in the third quarter.

The Bulldogs combined for 273 yards of total offense with 146 coming through the air and another 127 on the ground with three rushing touchdowns.  Defensively UR shut down the Lutes limiting them to just 191 yards of total offense with only 47 yards rushing.  The Maroon and Grey finished 4-of-7 on redzone opportunities and converted seven third downs.

Redlands looked to score quickly getting a strong opening possession traveling 61-yards on 10-plays setting them up on PLU's 2-yard line.  But a fumble would end the threat.  During the series Tyler Tremain (Folsom, CA) connected with Seth Weller (Olympia, WA) for 16-yards and Tony Williams Jr. (Indio, CA) had a pair of rushes combining for 35-yards.

Pacific Lutheran got on the scoreboard to begin the second quarter ending an 11-play, 85-yard drive capped off with a rushing touchdown from Darius Chaffin.  The very next possession Redlands would turn the ball over for the second time as another fumble would give PLU great field position inside the UR 20.  The Lutes though wouldn't get anything out of it as the Bulldogs defense would hold tough on 4th and 1.  Following a Bulldog punt that only went 22-yards the Lutes would take their next possession and go 50-yards ending with a four-yard touchdown grab by Marc Basa moving the score to 14-0.

The Lutes decided to go with a short kick-off giving UR possession at their own 42.  Two plays later on a 3rd and 5 Tremain would connect with Markelle Raymond (Lansing, MI) for a 49-yard reception putting the Bulldogs on the PLU4 with :15 seconds remaining.  Tremain would then take over with two rushes, one for three yards and the other for a one yard touchdown putting the U of R on the scoreboard.

Out of the half Redlands forced a huge turnover on the opening kickoff thanks to Laurence Williams (Corona, CA) who got a hand on the ball forcing a fumble from Kellen Meade, which was picked up by Ethan Knight (Chula Vista, CA).  The Maroon and Grey, who were setup on the PLU 2-yard line would then punch it in from 12-yards out following a penalty as Williams Jr. would take it 11-yards to the one before Tremain would pick up his second rushing touchdown on the day.  After a three and out by PLU Redlands would come down and kick a 35-yard field goal from Pre-Season All-American Vicente Garcia (Fontana, CA) that moved the score to 17-14.  The Lutes looked like they would recover on their next possession getting all the way down to the UR 21, but that's where the series would stall as Jae Thorn (Seattle, WA) would pick off a Chaffin pass returning it 55-yards down to the PLU 30.  Redlands was unable to grab any points off the turnover but would manage another seven points in the fourth quarter.

It came with 4:35 remaining on the clock as UR would march down the field in six-plays covering 50-yards that ended with an eight-yard touchdown run from Williams Jr.

Tremain finished the game 13-for-23 for 146 yards and added 38 yards on the ground and two touchdowns.  Williams Jr. was a force on the ground totaling 100 yards on 15 carries, averaging 6.3 YPR and a TD.  Raymond had the one catch for 49 yards, while Weller added six for 49 yards.

Defensively the Bulldogs saw Luke Purcella (University Place, WA) finish with 10 tackles (4 Solo), Williams and Jacob Sega (Oceanside, CA) with seven, Mikey Duran IV (Ceres, CA) and Jax Lee (Richland, WA) posting six and Scott Tinsley (Capitola, CA) and Kamdin Karmann (Riverside, CA) combining for ten.  UR totaled 3 sacks for 20-yards lost, and had nine tackles for a loss (30-Yards), which included 3.5 coming from Lee.  Williams added three pass break-ups and Thorn hauled in the 55-yard interception return.

On special teams Garcia had two punts, averaging 31.5 YPP with a long being for 41 and one landing inside the 20.  Williams Jr. had two kickoff returns for a combined 43 yards with a long being for 27.  On kickoffs Joey Newell (Duvall, WA) impressed with five kicks totaling 303 yards, averaging 60.6 YPK.

Redlands has a bye next Saturday and will return to competition on Saturday, September 16 when they host Linfield University beginning at 7:00pm.
