LOS ANGELES – After trailing with only eight minutes remaining
Jaiden Riodil (Tigard, OR) found the equalizer for the Bulldogs, but an Occidental College goal with :58 seconds left gave them the 2-1 win over the University of Redlands Women's Soccer team (1-5-1, 1-1-1 SCIAC) Saturday evening.
The Bulldogs were on their heels over the first 20 minutes as the Tigers took 10 shots without the Bulldogs recording an attempt. Luckily for the Maroon and Grey
Shannon Stewart (San Jose, CA) was able to make a pair of saves.
The first shot for the Bulldogs was taken by
Malia Kuhl (Seattle, WA) in the 21
st. After two more Tiger looks, which included another Stewart save,
Sabrina Semmere (Rancho Santa Margarita, CA) had an opportunity to put UR on top, but her attempt went high over the crossbar. The last opportunity for either team came from Redlands in the 42
nd when
Elena Pinto (Kent, WA) forced the first save of the game for the Tigers as the first half ended scoreless.
After a slow start to the first half the Bulldogs earned the first three shots and the first cornerkick in the second, which gave them a much needed spark.
Hannah Rice (Portland, OR) took one of the shots and
Anika Schmied (Santa Cruz, CA) took the other two, one which forced a save in the 48
th.
After defending at the mercy of Occidental's offense, the Bulldogs' dominant second half continued with shots from Pinto and
Taytum Stewart (Lake Elsinore, CA) forcing another two saves that kept the game scoreless.
Stewart continued her strong game following a great performance at Claremont-Mudd-Scripps with two more saves as she kept Oxy off the scoreboard in the 67
th and 70
th minutes.
The overall pressure for the Tigers finally paid off in the 79
th minute when they put away the go-ahead goal. Stewart would keep the Bulldogs alive less than two minutes with a save, which was an important one because the Bulldogs would equalize two minutes later following her save in the 83
rd.
Riodil scored her team-leading second of the season as the Bulldogs looked for their first comeback of the season.
The final five shots of the game came from Occidental with three on target, two being stopped b Stewart and the last being the eventual game-winner in the 90
th minute.
The Bulldogs were outshot 25-11 on the night but put six of their 11 shots on target. Stewart was able to save seven of the nine shots on goal as her great play was not enough for the Bulldogs to come away with a point on the road.
Redlands remains on the road next Wednesday, September 27 when they travel to take on undefeated No. 9 Pomona-Pitzer beginning at 4:00pm.
