WHITTIER, Calif. – The University of Redlands Men's Soccer team (7-1-1, 4-1-1 SCIAC) bounced back from a two-game winless streak as they blew out Whittier College 7-0 on the road in Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) action Saturday night.
Despite the comfortable win, it was
Seth Lawrence (Redlands, CA) who was forced to make the first save of the game in the 6
th minute. After an
Owen Jamieson (Danville, CA) shot missed wide of goal, Lawrence made a second stop in the 12
th minute as the Poets were on the front foot.
Cody Bell (Highland, CA) got things going offensively for the Bulldogs as his shot required a save from the Poet keeper :59 seconds later and that led to the offensive juggernaut.
Phillip Kostenko (Redmond, WA) had his shot on goal in the 19
th minute get saved, but :44 seconds later he found
Spencer Palmer (San Diego, CA) for the 1-0 lead, and the eventual game-winner.
In the following minutes,
Skylar Darwen (Los Angeles, CA),
Jarette Barajas (San Jose, CA), and
Connor Claborn (Santa Clarita, CA) all put shots on target, but all were saved as the lead remained at one through 34:00 minutes.
In the final five plus minutes Barajas continued his fantastic season as he put away his eighth to make it 2-0 in the 40th. Redlands continued to push for another before half, but
Julian Weber (Haiku, HI) had his shot stopped keeping the lead at two at intermission.
Kostenko got back on the scoresheet :21 seconds into the second half as Barajas added an assist to his earlier goal for a 3-0 lead.
After an extended period of inaction, Lawrence came up big in the 53
rd as he made back-to-back saves to maintain the shutout.
In the 58
th Barajas and Kostenko connected for a second time as Kostenko would finish his sixth of the season and Barajas now had three goal contributions.
Gabriel Martinez (San Jose, CA) made it 5-0 in the 66
th,
Landon Azavedo (Portland, OR) scored his first collegiate goal in the 84
th, and to finish off the night with another first time scorer, that made it 7-0, was
Alexander Salzetti (Tacoma, WA) who was assisted by Weber in the 87
th. That was also Weber's first career goal contribution.
Kostenko had two goals and an assist, Barajas had one goal and two assists, and in goal Lawrence played 57 minutes with four saves and
Brady Bachman (San Diego, CA) made two saves in 33 minutes of action off the bench.
Redlands will head to Pasadena for a matchup with the California Institute of Technology on Wednesday at 4:00 p.m.
