Redlands Women's Soccer puts away three goals in loss to Whittier

REDLANDS, Calif. – The University of Redlands Women's Soccer team (1-7-1, 1-3-1 SCIAC) held leads of 1-0 and 3-2 Saturday morning but four unanswered goals from Whittier College ended the game 6-3 in favor of the Poets at Farquhar Field.

The Poets got the first shot of the game in the fourth minute, but it was Natalie Turiace (San Dimas, CA), who floated a ball over the keeper from 25 yards out into the upper 90 for her second goal of the season, making it 1-0 in the fifth minute.

Gianna Alati (Lake Oswego, OR) then looked to make it 2-0 in the seventh minute but her shot went wide right of the post.

Then in the 12th the Poets were able to put their first shot on goal and it found the back of the net as they equalized at one. Less than two minutes later WC took a 2-1 lead.
Whittier would take two more shots before Sami Salinas (Foothill Ranch, CA) would tie things up on a shot that bounced off the keeper and off the post for her second score of the year as it was two all in the 16th.

Both teams continued to put shots on in the first half, including one off the post for Whittier, but for the most part the half ended much quieter after four goals scored in the first 16 minutes.

The Bulldogs wasted no time getting the lead back to start the second 45 as Salinas locked up her brace making it 3-2. On the goal Salinas got a cross from Taytum Stewart (Lake Elsinore, CA) and took a shot that was saved, which she would then come in and finish on the follow-up.

Hannah Rice (Portland, OR) forced the first Poet save of the day when her shot in the 49th minute was stopped. Shannon Stewart (San Jose, CA) then made her first save a few minutes later, but like the Salinas goal, the rebound from the save was slotted home by Whittier to tie it for the third time at three.

Just like they did in the first half, the Poets scored back-to-back goals and took the lead, 4-3, only 1:54 after tying the game.

The fifth and sixth goals came in the 61st and 67th minutes as the Bulldogs offense had not gotten a shot since allowing the third goal.

Down the stretch T. Stewart and Malia Kuhl (Seattle, WA) each put on shots on goal forcing save opportunities, Salinas hit one off the crossbar, and Alati, and Madeline Tetens (San Diego, CA) all had attempts but none were able to find the back of the net as the game ended 6-3 in favor of the Poets.

Salinas took five shots with three on goal and added two goals and an assist for five points. Four of the five stats (not including the three shots on goal) are or tied a career-high as her three goals this season is a new personal best.

S. Stewart played just over 75 minutes with two saves while Nicole Immoos (San Luis Obispo, CA) played the final 15 minutes and made one save with no goals allowed.

The Bulldogs will stay at home next week as they host California Institute of Technology on Wednesday, October 4 at 7:00 p.m. at Farquhar Field.
