REDLANDS, Calif. – The University of Redlands Women's Basketball team (7-8, 3-4 SCIAC) got a bounce back Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) win inside Currier Gym on Monday evening as they beat Chapman University in a competitive game, 71-64.
Aliyah Anderson (Oceanside, CA) helped get the scoring started as she found Carly Hicks (Portland, OR) for a three. Anderson then converted on a pair of free throws as the Bulldogs were out in front, 5-2, in the first two minutes.
Trailing by one with less than six minutes to play, Colbi Zorich (Kenmore, WA) made a jumper in the paint and converted the and-one and then :16 seconds later she grabbed an offensive rebound and scored in the paint to put Redlands up four, 12-8.
After holding a few early leads, the two sides went back-and-forth as the quarter was tied on three different occasions that last coming at 21-21, when the Panthers made a three in the final :30 seconds to send the teams into the second quarter all locked up.
Leaya Mckinney (Sedalia, CO) got the offense going to begin the second quarter as she took advantage of her own offensive rebound and converted another and-one for the Maroon and Grey to make it 24-21.
The lead would be grow to as many as nine, 30-21, with 5:38 on the clock as Anderson, Zorich, and Mckinney all scored, while the defense continued to hold the Panthers scoreless.
Chapman would respond with the next six points as they pulled within two, but AJ Wick (Henderson, NV) drew a foul with 1:22 left in the half and Redlands was able to take a five-point lead, 32-27, into the break.
Hicks began the second half the way she did the first as she hit a three to make it a three-possession game, which Zorich picking up the assist.
Zorich then made it a double-digit game for the first time with 7:41 to play as she made a pair of free throws.
Redlands would lead by double digits as late as 4:28, but Chapman went on an 11-2 run down to the :11 second mark as it was only a one-point game, 45-44. Mckinney, however, continued her hot shooting as she got out on a fast break getting fed by Anderson for the easy score ending the period.
The Bulldogs would lead throughout the fourth getting up by eight on multiple occasions and used a 13-of-15 mark at the line to close out the game as the two sides combined for 44 points in the quarter.
Mckinney missed her first career double-double by one rebound as she finished with career-highs of 11 points (5-6 FG) and nine rebounds. Zorich had a game-high 19 points (11-11 FT) and added 10 rebounds. Hicks had 15 points (5-8 FG, 3-3 3FG, 2-3 FT) and Anderson had 10 points (4-4 FT), 10 rebounds, and five assists.
The Bulldogs will play their third game in four days as they travel to Pasadena this Wednesday, January 17 for a match-up with the California Institute of Technology beginning at 7:00 p.m.
