REDLANDS, Calif. – After being held scoreless for only the second time this season last weekend, the University of Redlands Men's Soccer team (8-2-3, 5-1-2 SCIAC) routed the University of La Verne 5-0 on Wednesday evening at Farquhar Field. The Bulldogs are now 4-0-1 across their last five games and during that stretch have outscored their opponents 18-2.
Redlands came out firing in the first 15 minutes as they outshot La Verne 7-0. Owen Jamieson (Danville, CA), Julian Weber (Haiku, HI), Anders Beckton (Seattle, WA), Bo Robertson (Portland, OR), and Phillip Kostenko (Redmond, WA) all had looks on goal that, if put on target, would have had good chance at finding the back of the net, but all missed the target.
The U of R continued to press, though, as Weber finished off his second of the season in the 18th minute. Connor Claborn (Santa Clarita, CA) played Kostenko on the right side of the box where he crossed a ball in front of the goal finding Weber on the back post.
Then in the 29th Zach Darmanyan (San Diego, CA) got an entry to Claborn in the midfield, and instead of handing it off following a couple of dribbles, decided to take it in space before hitting from 20-yards out with his left that surprised the keeper finding its way inside the post for a 2-0 Bulldog lead.
The third goal of the first half came from the Bulldog season goal leader as Cody Bell (Highland, CA) connected with Kostenko around the top left corner of the box where he converted with his left.
Jamieson forced two saves within a minute of each other off headers following corners in the first three minutes of the second 45:00 minutes.
Then Weber made it a brace in the 52nd. Kostenko again got the assist as he made another cross from the right side finding Weber who was open for a header at the back post pushing the score to 4-0.
Finishing off the win was Ryan Brown (Novato, CA) in the 84th minute. The Leopard keeper came out to try and win a 50-50 ball, and he did initially, but the ball sat down in front of Brown who chipped it over the keeper who was still on the ground to complete the 5-0 win for the Maroon and Grey. For Brown it is his first career goal.
Redlands held a 26-3 shot advantage and an 8-1 shot on-goal edge as Brady Bachman (San Diego, CA) was forced into only one save attempt.
The Bulldogs will stay at home and host Pomona-Pitzer at 4:30 p.m. at Farquhar Field in game one of a doubleheader with the women's team this Saturday, October 19.
