THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. – Less than 24 hours after a tough loss to Chapman University, the University of Redlands Women's Volleyball team (8-10, 4-7 SCIAC) had the long trip to California Lutheran University (CLU) Saturday evening where they would drop in straight sets.
Kaegan Wherry (Englewood, CO) came ready to play as she added kills on two of the first four points to help the Bulldogs hold an early 3-1 lead.
Trailing 7-4 Lyric Waterman (Aurora, CO) assisted Wherry as Redlands scored three unanswered points to tie the set at seven.
After digging another hole for themselves, Avery Aminoff (Alexandria, VA) and Wherry scored four points to pull within one, 17-16. The U of R added to the positive stretch with four more points coming off an Elizabeth Moyer (Surprise, AZ) kill and three Regal errors as they went in front, 20-19.
Makaila Brooks (Las Vegas, NV) brought the Bulldogs to within four points of the first set win, but the Regals cleaned up their play late as they won the final five points to win the opening frame, 25-21.
Makenna Van Hofwegen (Buckeye, AZ) found Aminoff for the opening point of the second set, but that would be the only lead for the Bulldogs as CLU cruised to the 25-13 second set victory.
Despite the offensive struggles the defense kept the Maroon and Grey in the match in the third set as Brooks, Aminoff, and Esha Ball (Fresno, CA) all had assisted blocks for their first four points of the set.
The set would proceed to go back-and-forth with ties occurring up till 10-10. The Regals, though, ended the spell with four-straight points after a 3-0 Bulldogs run had given them the lead.
Trailing by three, 19-16, and CLU only needing six points to end the match, Redlands could have folded, but instead they mounted a 4-1 surge that tied it at 20.
Their efforts would fall short though as the Regals finished the match off with a 25-22 win.
The schedule does not get any easier as No. 12 University of La Verne comes to Currier next Tuesday, October 29 beginning at 7:00 p.m.
