Bulldog Women's Volleyball completes road comeback win at Chapman

ORANGE, Calif. – The University of Redlands Women's Volleyball team (7-4, 3-1 SCIAC) battled back from a 2-1 deficit to beat Chapman University on the road Friday night 25-20, 19-25, 15-25, 25-18, 15-13.

After some early back-and-forth in the first set the Bulldogs started to pull away as they led 16-10 after kills from Avery Aminoff (Alexandria, CA), Makenna Van Hofwegen (Buckeye, AZ), and a block from Esha Ball (Fresno, CA).

The Panthers, though, won the next six points to tie the set. Elizabeth Moyer (Surprise, AZ) and Emma Murphy (South Jordan, UT) would then spark the U of R offense combining for five kills down the stretch as Redlands took the first set 25-20.

In the second Chapman led throughout, with the exception of a 1-1 tie after Lali Makaiwi (Las Vegas, NV) assisted Kaegan Wherry (Englewood, CO), as the match was tied at a set a piece.

It was much of the same in the third as Redlands fell behind 8-1 before finding themselves down 2-1.

But this did not deter the Maroon and Grey as they found a way to grind out the comeback winning 17 of the final 25 points in the fourth period to even the match at two sets. Murphy and Aminoff had four kills each during the run and Wherry and Kaitlyn DeLong (Rancho Santa Margarita, CA) with three.

In the deciding, first to 15, fifth set, the Bulldogs fell behind 4-2 and did not even the score until it was six all. But then the Panthers committed four consecutive hitting errors that put Redlands ahead 10-7.

That lead would be enough for the Bulldogs to pull out the win, 15-13, taking their third Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) victory of the season.

Murphy finished with a career-high 18 kills. Wherry finished one short of her career high of 28 digs, Makaiwi tied her career-high with 27 digs, and Moyer posted a career best 17 digs as well. Then Lyric Waterman (Aurora, CO) added 22 assists.

The Bulldogs return to Currier Gym Saturday, October 5 at 4:00 p.m. as they host California Lutheran University.
