Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Three second half goals leads Redlands Men's Soccer to 4-1 win over Whittier

REDLANDS, Calif. – The University of Redlands Men's Soccer team (6-2-2, 3-1-1 SCIAC) put together a big offensive performance Saturday afternoon on Farquhar Field battling the triple digit temperatures to beat Whittier College 4-1 with three of the four goals coming over the final 18:00 minutes.

The Bulldogs took the opening three shots of the day courtesy of Phillip Kostenko (Redmond, WA) and Zach Darmanyan (San Diego, CA).

Brady Bachman (San Diego, CA) was then called into action in the eighth minute before Anders Beckton (Seattle, WA) unleashed a shot that hit the post in the 14th and then another that forced a save in the 18th.

First-Year Jared Keyvan (Costa Mesa, CA) gave the Bulldogs the lead into the break thanks to the go ahead goal in the 31st-minute.  Beckton worked his way towards the end line on the right side before serving a cross to the backpost for the header finish by Keyvan, his first career goal.

With that 1-0 lead Bachman maintained that advantage in the 47th right out of intermission when he made an important early stop.

After controlling the majority of the half the Poets finally found the equalizer in the 61st.

With the game deadlocked throughout the second half and with temperatures soaring Redlands was able to find their footing across the final 20 minutes.  The game-winner coming from Taylor Bell (Highland, CA) Julian Weber (Haiku, HI) came down the left flank and touched a pass to Beckton who served another cross to the back post this time for T. Bell who smashed it away with a strong header finish.

Just over a minute later the Maroon and Grey added insurance as Beckton connected.  A Whittier turnover in the midfield found the foot of Kostenko who one-touched a through ball in behind for Beckton to go straight to the goal, which he calmly slotted it low past the oncoming keeper and his second goal of the season pushing the lead to 3-1.

Carrying all the momentum with a lot of young players on the pitch, Bulldog First-Year Jacob White (Fontana, CA) provided his first career goal.  Darmanyan took on a defender on the left side of the box, which he then took towards the endline before whipping in a low cross for White who took a touch from inside six-yards.

This is the second consecutive four-goal game for the U of R after scoring four total goals in the previous four contests.

Beckton finishes his week with four assists and a goal as he looks like a favorite for Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) Offensive Athlete of the Week honors.

Redlands outshot Whittier 19-8 with nine shots on goal.  They also added a corner kick in each half.

Caltech will be in Redlands, CA for a 7:00 p.m. kickoff next Wednesday, October 9.
