Bulldog Men's Soccer powers past Caltech 5-0

REDLANDS, Calif. – The University of Redlands Men's Soccer team (7-2-2, 4-1-1 SCIAC) displayed a balanced offensive attack Wednesday night at Farquhar Field in a 5-0 win against the California Institute of Technology (Caltech).

In the fifth minute the Bulldogs earned a corner kick that Julian Weber (Haiku, HI) took. His cross was headed out but it came right back to him, which he then served back into the box again finding Bo Robertson (Portland, OR) for the header and an early 1-0 lead.

The following shots on goal came from Phillip Kostenko (Redmond, WA), Connor Claborn (Santa Clarita, CA), and Anders Beckton (Seattle, WA).  Beckton sent a ball into the middle of the box where Kostenko was able to slot it home for a 2-0 advantage after only 14 minutes.

Brady Bachman (San Diego, CA) then made a couple of saves in the middle of the half as the Beavers started to settle into the game. Whatever chance they had to come back basically ended when Landon Azavedo (Portland, OR) finished a free kick from 25 yards out late in the half. After a cross-over from Cody Bell (Highland, CA), Azavedo would go to the right of the wall fooling the goalkeeper who was leaning to his right, putting away his second goal of the season.

Insurance was added in the 57th minute when the ball came up the right side.  Zach Darmanyan (San Diego, CA) won possession with his header, which he used to pass into the middle of the 18-yard box where Claborn hit a clean ball past the diving keeper for a 4-0 lead.

With the reserves on the pitch, the Bulldogs continued to dominate possession and opportunities. In the 76th minute the fifth and final goal found the back of the net. Proceeding the goal was a few failed attempts to get the ball to the feet of a Bulldog in the box before Anthony Sena (Henderson, NV) passed a ball off to an oncoming Alexander Salzetti (Tacoma, WA) who did a good job of keeping the ball down before finishing for his first goal of the season.

The game was never in doubt as the Bulldogs outshot the Beavers 23-7, held an 11-3 shot on goal edge, and had seven more corner kicks (8-1).

Redlands will now make the long trip to Thousand Oaks, CA to take on California Lutheran University this Saturday, October 12 beginning at 7:00 p.m.
