Redlands Men's Basketball beats George Fox 105-97 to open Ken Schumann Classic

FOREST GROVE, Ore. – The University of Redlands Men's Basketball team (2-0) stayed undefeated this season as they outscored George Fox University (GFU) 105-97 on Friday evening to open the Ken Schumann Classic.

At the 13:33 mark Jhace Boston (Bakersfield, CA) made a free throw that put the Bulldogs ahead 16-11. After the Bruins came back to take a two-point lead, a 16-3 run put Redlands back up 29-21 with 9:07 to play.

During the run Nathan Mattera (Fontana, CA) hit a three, Lucas Gordon (San Marcos, CA) scored inside, Omari Ferguson (Chicago, Ill.) made a jumper and scored on the fastbreak, Donovan Ware (Palmdale, CA) added five points, and Jake Hlywiak (Valencia, CA) got a two in the lane.

The ebbs and flows of the half continued as GFU cut the deficit to one before Redlands finished the final 6:44 by outscoring them by nine points pushing the lead to double digits, 55-45, at the half.

After a media timeout with 13:11 to play in the second half, Ferguson stepped to the free throw line where he made two and put the Bulldogs up by their largest margin of 16, 77-61.

This double-digit lead lasted until the 7:32 mark, before the Bruins would mount a comeback taking a four-point lead, 95-91, following a 20-4 run.

Redlands responded well, scoring 14 of the game's final 16 points as they managed to fend off a pesky GFU team.

Ferguson finished with 27 points on only 14 field goals attempts and converted on nine-of-12 free throws. Chozen Amadi (Dallas, TX) had a sneaky 18 points and four assists. Hlywiak and Gordon each contributed 15 points.

Redlands forced 23 turnovers and picked up 35 points off of them.  They also added 20 second chance points, 50 points in the paint, 26 fastbreak points, and had 39 points come from the bench.  The U of R also finished shooting 44% from the field, 29.6% from three-point territory and 75% from the free-throw line.

The Bulldogs have a quick turnaround as they play host Pacific University tomorrow, Saturday, November 23 at 8:00 p.m.
