Redlands Women's Basketball earns first SCIAC game following road win at Caltech

PASADENA, Calif. – The University of Redlands Women's Basketball team (4-5, 1-1 SCIAC) edged the California Institute of Technology (Caltech), 68-56, for their first Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) win of the season Wednesday evening.  

AJ Wick (Henderson, NV) and Colbi Zorich (Kenmore, WA) had the game tied at four in the opening minute and a half and they used a 13-0 run to put UR up 15-4 in the opening three minutes. Leila Hosn (Seattle, WA) found Carly Hicks (Portland, OR) for the first Bulldog ttriple and Hosn set up Alex Facelo (San Jose, CA) for the team's second during the run.

The lead grew to as many as 12, but a scoreless drought of 1:55 to finish the quarter had the Maroon and Grey up nine, 22-13.  

Ten of the first twelve points in the second period came from the Bulldogs as they held their largest lead of the game at 17, 32-15. Leaya McKinney (Sedalia, CO) had four points during the stretch and Kayden Sanders (Nipomo, CA) scored off a second chance opportunity from her own offensive rebound.

Redlands grew their lead to 18 on two occasions taking a 39-24 advantage into the locker room.

Zorich had a 6-2 personal run in the first two plus minutes of the third as she extended the lead to 19, 45-26. Caltech, however, cut it to 12, 54-42, with 2:34 to play. Jenna Schmitt (Bellevue, WA) and Wick then scored the final three points to maintain the U of R 15-point halftime advantage after three quarters.

In the fourth Redlands led by as many as 19 and would not allow the Beavers any closer than 12 to secure the road win.

Wick (15), Zorich (14), Hosn (11), and Facelo (10) all scored in double figures. Wick also added 12 rebounds, two blocks, and a steal. McKinney finished with nine rebounds, a block, and a steal.  For the game Redlands finished with 19 points off turnovers, added 36 points in the paint, and 12 second chance points.  

The Bulldogs remain on the road for their fourth in-a-row this Saturday, December 7 at 5:00 p.m. when they travel to Thousand Oaks, CA to take on California Lutheran University.
