REDLANDS, Calif. – The University of Redlands Women's Water Polo team (0-6) dropped both games at the Bulldog Mini #2 Tournament as they lost 17-6 to Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (CMS) and 9-3 to the University of Toronto on Saturday at the Thompson Aquatic Center (TAC).
Game 1 (Claremont-Mudd-Scripps; L, 17-6)
The Bulldogs fell in an early 11-0 hole in the first ten minutes to the Athenas, but got on the scoreboard from Courtney Sawin (Tacoma, WA) who was set up by Marlie Potocki (Joliet, Ill.) at the 3:18 mark of the second quarter. Two minutes later Christine Chua (Arcadia, CA) got out on a fast break and scored to make it 11-2. At the half U of R would trail 12-2.
Following a pair of CMS goals, Chua found Lucia Notaro (Thousand Oaks, CA) at the 4:49 mark of the third moving the score to 14-3. Anika Lundbaek (San Anselmo, CA) made it back-to-back Bulldog tallies with 1:20 remaining in the quarter as the Maroon and Grey would go into final quarter trailing 15-4.
Redlands found the back of the net twice in the final 6:33 of the game as they held CMS scoreless. Emma Parker (Yucaipa, CA) scored the first of the two fourth period goals as Sawin grabbed the assist. Lunbaek then got her brace as she scored in the final five seconds.
Game 2 (University of Toronto; L, 9-3)
After a tough game with the Athenas to begin the tournament Redlands would come into their match-up with the University of Toronto holding them to only one goal in the first 12 minutes of the game, while receiving goals from Parker and Kaitlynn Pierceall (Beaumont, CA). Pierceall grabbed the assist on Parker's goal and Sawin assisted the second goal.
After trailing 4-2 at the half, the U of R found themselves down 5-2 in the first two minutes of the third quarter before Parker was set up by Pierceall for the third Bulldog connection.
Unfortunately for the Bulldogs Pierceall was called for her third exclusion with 4:50 left in the third and Redlands would not score after that.
Evelyn Teeter (Westminster, CA) made nine saves as she played 32 minutes. Sawin had an assist, three drawn exclusions and a steal.
Parker finished the tournament with three goals, tied for the fifth most. Pierceall and Sawin each had two assists, tying them for fourth most. Lundbaek, Parker, and Katelyn Dwelley (Wildomar, CA) each had two field blocks, accounting for six of the eight total field blocks across the three games. Teeter finished with 15 saves, the most by seven.
The Bulldogs will head on the road next Friday, February 23 as they travel to Thousand Oaks for a matchup with No. 11 Loyola Marymount University at 1:00 p.m. and then Ottawa University Arizona at 3:40 p.m.
