Redlands Women's Water Polo drops low-scoring game to La Verne

CLAREMONT, Calif. – The University of Redlands Women's Water Polo team (2-14, 1-2 SCIAC) lost a low-scoring Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) game against the University of La Verne (ULV) 10-6 Wednesday afternoon.

The Bulldogs got in an early 4-1 hole after the first eight minutes as the lone goal came at the 2:31 mark when Sofia Portello (Sonoma, CA) found Emma Parker (Yucaipa, CA) for what was a 2-1 game at the time.

Redlands' defense was able to hold the Leopards scoreless for the entire second quarter as Courtney Sawin (Tacoma, WA) found the back of the net on a powerplay for the only goal of the period as UR was within two, 4-2, at the half.

Following 13 minutes of being held without a goal by the Redlands defense, ULV started the second half scoring with a penalty at the 3:44 mark of the third. Less than :30 seconds later Sawin bagged her second of the game as it was a two-goal deficit with 3:31 still to play in the quarter.

La Verne would score the final goal of the third and then seal the win with the game-winning tally in the first two minutes of the fourth. Redlands would end the final six minutes with three goals after only scoring twice over the previous twenty.

Those final three goals came from Lucia Notaro (Thousand Oaks, CA) who was found by Portello, Marlie Potocki (Joliet, Ill.) and then Christine Chua (Arcadia, CA) on a powerplay as the Bulldogs fell in a neutral site game hosted by Claremont-Mudd-Scripps.

Portello finished with a game-high three assists, while adding a drawn exclusion. Ainsley Killian (Beaverton, OR) and Parker each finished with two steals, while Parker drew three of the eight Leopard exclusions. Evelyn Teeter (Westminster, CA) posted nine saves and one steal across 32 minutes.

Redlands continues with SCIAC competition this Saturday at 11:00 a.m. when they host No. 1 Pomona-Pitzer inside the Thompson Aquatic Center (TAC).
