REDLANDS, Calif. – The University of Redlands Softball team (10-3) completed their doubleheader with Baldwin Wallace University (BW) ahead of the rain as they lost Game 1 (6-0) before taking Game 2 (8-3).
Game 1 (L, 6-0)
The Bulldogs offense was never able to get things going in Game 1 as they finished with only five hits. Brooklyn Bard (Garden Grove, CA) had two of them and she stole a base, Avery Duran (Corona, CA) and Ashley Shelton (Jurupa Valley, CA) each doubled, and Leila Jackson (Vallejo, CA) added a single and the lone drawn walk.
After three scoreless innings the Yellow Jackets opened up the scoring with four runs in the Top of the 4th using four hits and capitalizing on a pair of Bulldog errors to go in front. They added another run in the 5th and an insurance tally in the 7th.
Kaylen Galaviz (Yuba City, CA) threw a scoreless sixth on only 10 pitches in the only scoreless inning after the third. Katlyn Gandara (Whittier, CA) got the start and was charged with her third loss on the season throwing 5.0 Innings, giving up five runs (four earned) on eight hits.
Game 2 (W, 8-3)
Baldwin Wallace started the second game with a solo home run in the top of the first, but Redlands was able to find their first runs of the series in the bottom half as Jackson singled through the left side to tie the game following a Bard walk and a Natalie Horton (Palmdale, CA) double.
Gandara then came up and brought home Jackson and Horton for a 3-1 lead with a single up the middle. Redlands was not done though, as Sophia Magcale (Cerritos, CA) walked to put two on base. Runs four and five of the inning then came on a pair of singles from Annissa Dorres (Mentone, CA) and Paige Messenlehner (Fresno, CA).
Starter Galaviz was able to settle in after the first inning as she only allowed one hit the rest of the afternoon.
In the bottom of the fourth the Bulldogs got their sixth run as Bard hit a ground ball that skipped under the Yellow Jackets first baseman's glove before the right fielder missed played the ball allowing her to use her speed to come all the way around and score.
Following the second run of the game for the Yellow Jackets Maya Holshoe (Redlands, CA) hit a pinch hit triple down the right field line scoring Messenlehner who was on first after a leadoff single.
Bard then got an RBI as she was able to hit a fly ball to center for a sacrifice giving UR an 8-2.
With the rain coming down heavy in the seventh the Yellow Jackets got their third run across before Paige Ellinger (Temecula, CA) was able to get the third out and securing the win for the Maroon and Grey.
Galaviz got her first win as a Bulldog allowing only one earned run in five innings.
At the plate Messenlehner stayed hot with a 3-for-3 game, Horton and Gandara both had multi-hit games, while Jackson stole two bases.
Redlands will host John Carroll University on Saturday, March 9 with game one of the doubleheader set for 11:00 a.m.
