REDLANDS, Calif. – The University of Redlands Women's Water Polo team (2-13, 1-1 SCIAC) won their first Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) game of the season as they beat the California Institute of Technology 13-9 on Saturday morning at the Thompson Aquatic Center (TAC).
Kaitlynn Pierceall (Beaumont, CA) scored the first two goals for the Bulldogs as Ainsley Killian (Beaverton, OR) picked up an assist on the first tally.
After the Beavers tied the game at two, Sofia Portello (Sonoma, CA) was able to make it 3-2 at the 2:26 mark of the first. At the end of the opening eight minutes the two sides were tied at three.
Pierceall and Anika Lundbaek (San Anselmo, CA) gave Redlands their first multi-goal lead with 3:12 to play in the half as they had held Caltech scoreless for the first five plus minutes.
In the final 2:52 both teams scored two-straight as the Bulldogs finished the half with the final two connections going in front 7-5. The goals came from Alyssa Sorrell (Highland, CA) and Emma Parker (Yucaipa, CA) with Portello and Chritine Chua (Arcadia, CA) getting the assists.
Redlands put the game away in the third as Parker scored twice followed by Gianna Ratto (Santa Rosa, CA) who notched her first as the lead was five, 10-5. Chua got her second assist, while Parker and Evelyn Teeter (Westminster, CA) picked up their first.
It was a back-and-forth end to the game as the five-goal lead helped the Bulldogs hold on for a 13-9 victory.
Parker started slow but finished fast with six goals for the game. Pierceall had three goals and two assists. Teeter finished with seven saves, an assist, and two steals in goal.
Redlands returns to the pool this Wednesday, March 13 when they travel to face the University of La Verne beginning at 4:00 p.m.
