Redlands Baseball drops series opener at Whittier

WHITTIER, Calif. – The University of Redlands Baseball team (14-14, 6-10 SCIAC) was run-ruled at Whittier College, 11-1, Friday afternoon as they recorded only six hits and allowed 15.

The Bulldogs' first scoring opportunity came in the second when Sebastian Mejorado (Oceanside, CA) singled to third to lead off the inning. Then with one out Gabriel Ceja advanced Mejorado to second with a walk. The next two batters, though, struck out and grounded into a fielder's choice to strand the two runners.

Trailing 1-0 heading into the bottom of the fourth the Bulldogs allowed six runs on seven hits.

In the seventh the Bulldogs got on the scoreboard with an RBI-single from Jake Burgess (Riverside, CA) plating Luke Hanson (Escondido, CA) who scored as a pinch runner. The Poets, however would get out of the inning with their third double play.

Whittier pushed three more runs across the plate in the bottom of the seventh inning extending their lead. Redlands kept pushing, though, as pinch hitter Mason Chetcuti (Redwood City, CA) started the eighth with a single to left. He was pinch run for by Sean McCance (Irvine, CA), but a fourth double play took him off the base paths putting two outs on the board.

Jared Anderson (Gilbert, AZ) followed with a hit a two-out single up the middle, but the inning would come to an end on a fielder's choice.

The Poets took advantage of the Bulldogs not scoring in the top half as they ended the game with a double to win with the 10-run rule.

Luke De Vries (Irvine, CA) was the lone Bulldog to reach base multiple times thanks to a pair of hits. The U of R pitching staff allowed 15 hits, walked six Poets, and hit two more.

The Bulldogs will return to the field Saturday morning, April 6 with a home doubleheader against the Poets at The Yard starting at 11:00 a.m.
