MIDDLETOWN, Conn. – The University of Redlands Women's Tennis team advanced to the NCAA Division III Regional Final (Round of 16) Saturday following a 5-1 win over University of Mary Washington.
The Bulldogs improve to 12-7, 5-2 SCIAC, beat the Eagles twice on the season and have now set themselves up with a match-up against the regional host and No. 4 ranked Wesleyan University.
It was a grind in doubles to open the match but Redlands found a way to take an advantage into singles.
Gabby Rockwood (Park City, UT) and
Rayna Sugai (Las Vegas, NV) held strong at No. 2 winning 8-5 giving the Maroon and Grey their first point. The Eagles were quick on a response grabbing a point at the top spot leveling the match as
Maegan Deng (Redondo Beach, CA) and
Livi Rockwood (Park City, UT) would fall 8-5.
Then at No. 3
Kiana Brady (Hermosa Beach, CA) and
Christine O'Brien (Leawood, KS) would need a breaker to give UR the edge winning 8-7 (4). This momentum carried over into singles as Redlands would take the first three points.
Deja Brown rolled at No. 5 6-1, 6-1, Brady gave up just one game at No. 4 winning 6-1, 6-0 and G. Rockwood would grab the clinch at No. 6 winning 6-4, 6-3.
Other matches on once clinched included Deng at No. 1 who was up 6-4, 5-2, Sugai at No. 2 who was up 6-1, 4-3, and L. Rockwood who was up 6-3, 3-1.
Redlands takes on Wesleyan University Sunday, May 12 beginning at 9:00am PST.
